This is a short cage derailleur
Nice derailleur but is mis-described as medium in the text. There are only 2 variations of this derailleur Short and Medium, not Medium and Long. I needed the medium for my application (triple chainring / 12-27 cassette).
I bought a medium that was in stock elsewhere which is working crisply on my bike. This one has gone into my spares drawer until I'm using a compact setup again.
Either way this is great value for a 9 speed setup to replace older Tiagra or even 105 components.

Does the job nicely
Cheap n cheerful. Got my commuter bike back to smooth gear changes at a fraction of the cost that I was fearing. Nowt wrong with a bit of Sora on a bike that's going to be abused.

Why pay more?
There are "better" derailleurs out there but I have KOMs on Strava on segements with 1000s of attempts and this derailleur is the only one I use. Never broken - and it'd be FAR easier to lose the weight by not eating a pie. Smooth and good quality - buy one!

Compatibility
I bought the (Close ratio Mega-9 HG50 cassette 11-32) and the (Deore 2-piece design triple chainset for 9-speed 48/36/26) as upgrades when changing my road bike to a tourer. The RD I currently have is a Sora 9-speed short cage. I need to change this to a medium or lang cage. Will this Medium Cage work with this combination?
Thanks.
Asked by: isleofman
I think you'll need the medium cage. There isn't a long cage, as far as I'm aware. I use a medium cage on a similar set-up on my commuting bike.

Will a short cage be OK with an 11-28 cassette?
The guidance says that the short cage should only be used for up to 11-27t cassettes, but would it work for 11-28? What's the impact of having a short vs. a medium cage? I've currently got a short cage and a 11-25t cassette but I'm planning to change to a 11-28 cassette.
Asked by: EdOKR
This derailleur will only work with a maximum of a 27T cog. It will not function correctly with a 28T option.

Compatibility with shifters
Is this Derailleur compatible with 8 speed shifters, i.e. does it work on the same pull ratio as traditional SiS shifters?
Asked by: POIUYTREW
Yes, have tried it with 7,8,9 speed systems. The SIS action comes from the levers not the derailleur, only length of travel.

Which Sora rear derail for 12-25 & 34-50? Short or med version?
Asked by: AndeasXng
The longer cage versions are generally for bikes with three chain rings up front . I run exactly that gearing on a short cage rear mech and it runs perfectly.

What length is the cage? Short, medium or long.
Asked by: Stoomed
I've just received it from Wiggle and it is a 3500 SS - SHORT cage.
This is for double not triple set ups.
The specs are:
max. sprocket size: 25 - 32 teeth
min. sprocket size: 11 - 14 teeth
total capacity: 37 teeth
The GS version has the same spec but with a capacity of 41 teeth.

Which Shimano Sora derailleur for Cannondale Synapse Sora Triple
I need to buy an new rear derailleur for my Cannondale Synapse Sora. The measured distance between the pulley wheel centres of my fitted sora rear derailleur is 82mm, which size derailleur do I need?
Looking on Shimano's website they refer to 2 types of Sora rear derailleurs:
RD 3500(SS) Short Cage
RD 3500(GS) Long Cage
Your website however refers to medium cage and short cage, so which size do I need?
Also, in response to a previous question you stated that the medium cage pulleys are 70mm between centres, so this makes it even more confusing!
Asked by: JonnieR
Short cage will cope upto a 28 tooth rear sprocket and a long cage upto 34 tooth (with appropriate chain lengths). Due to the widely different ratios I suspect a triple needs a long cage rear mech even for a 28 tooth cassette.

Sora for vintage racer
I have a vintage race bike, with friction(pull) gear levers. Can I replace the faulty rear derailleur with this Sora?
Asked by: CenturionSuperLeMans
Yes, I used a 9 speed SORA with downtube friction levers and it worked well.
