Shimano are offering the new XT wheelsets in two options - an all-mountain set with a through-axle front hub and strength boosted by wider rims and thicker spokes, or the standard XT XC set that almost mimics XTR with less bells-and-whistles it flourishes. Still, the low weight, alloy nipples and 24 spokes of the all-mountain wheels puts the emphasis on less aggressive riders rather than those looking for big drops. The rear freehub gets and instant engagement mechanism from XTR, the rims are tubeless ready (for tubes or tubeless) and the hubs are Centre-Lock splined, although you could still fit six-bolt rotors with an adapter. The axles are oversized aluminium. So far so good. We've put a fair number of miles into our wheels and they haven't flinched. For weight weenies, the XC wheels are about 1.66kg a pair and the all-mountain ones are around 2.05kg.
In conclusion...
Even the all-mountain wheels are still XC biased, but for that they're great
