Shimano brakes enjoy great popularity amoung a growing group of cyclists. And this is not surprising. Anyone who has personally experienced the benefits of disc brakes won't want to be without them anymore - and word soon gets around. in the developement of the Shimano disc brake product line, the focus was not only set on high braking power but also on what is called "Ideal Linear Response" or controllability. In many trials and test series Shimano discovered that it doesn't take much to develop a brake with beefy braking power. However if the bake isn't controllable, it is useless. "Power is nothing without control." This is why Shimano has always focused on developing disc brakes offering the rider perfect "linear response". What all Shimano disc brakes have in common is the outstanding balance between braking power and response and hence exceptionally good controllability.
These are not supplied with levers or Hydraulic hose
About Disc Brakes
Bicycle disc brakes consist of a metal disc attached to the wheel hub that rotates with the wheel. Brake calipers are attached to the frame or fork along with pads that squeeze together on the disc. The way it is attached to the bike will be either by IS (International Standard) which has two holes facing the disc or Post Mount, which has threads going into the fork. Disc brakes have been successfully used on motorbikes for decades, and are the principal choice there. The primary benefit of disc brakes is that they perform equally well in all conditions including water, mud and snow. This is due to their position closer to the hub and away from the ground and possible contaminants like water, which can coat and freeze on the rim in colder temperatures. The pads are usually made from metal sinters or an organic compound instead of rubber. Water acts as a lubricant to rubber but not metal, therefore disc brakes maintain their stopping power in wet conditions. They also avoid the problem that rim brakes have of wearing out the wheel rims, especially in muddy conditions, as well as the requirement that the rim be straight. Disc brakes offer improved modulation of braking power and generally require less finger effort to achieve the same braking power. The advantages of discs make them well-suited to steep, extended downhills through wet and muddy off-road terrain, common in freeride bicycle riding.

Magazine reviews for Shimano XTR M965 Hydraulic Disc Brake
Review from MBR
Fitted with the sintered pads we found the XTR brake calipers to have plenty of power and modulation. While they're not the lightest brakes tested, they offered a good balance between weight and durability, and given their pedigree they're not bad value either
In conclusion...
XTR is the cream of the crop, so Shimano produce two unique (front and rear) IS calipers that are nothing short of cold forged works of art
Rating: 10/10
Review from MBR
Modulation with the resin pads is excellent but if you want stopping power you need to run the metal pads(also supplied), upping the weight.
In conclusion...
Detailing and finishing on the XTR is amazing, even the bottom edge of the brake pads has been chamfered to help guide the rotor into place.
Rating: 9/10
Review from Singletrack
The caliper is a gorgeous classy looking thing indeed - like other Shimano calipers but put on a diet and interbred with a lovely smooth stream pebble.
In conclusion...
Beautiful calipers, not so beautiful Dula Control units, very powerful with great modulation but rather costly
