Full face helmets are designed to offer extra protection in higher-risk events such as downhill and freeride. They vary from ultra-lightweight designs that simply offer additional protection from branches to heavy Moto-Cross style helmets designed to protect the whole head in a more serious fall.

I'd tried full-face helmets before a couple of years ago and didn't really get along with them. They felt heavy and claustrophobic. As well as feeling that my peripheral vision was slightly impaired, I didn't like how they muffled my hearing - I like to hear what's going on around me and what noises my bike is making.
Full-facers have improved a great deal since then. This new Evolution from SixSixOne removes all my previous niggles. It's light. The open face of the helmet gives a big 'can’t see the sides' widescreen window to look out of. And I can hear what's going on around me. The only thing that reminds me that I'm wearing it is the extra warmth generated compared to a normal helmet. But even this wasn't too bad; there's a few small vents on the sides, rear and top of the helmet as well as the mesh-vented mouth guard. And the CoolMax lining did a decent job of soaking up sweat.
Thankfully I've not crash tested the helmet yet. And I hope I never do.
