About Cassettes & Freewheels

Cassettes and freewheels for bikes are a cluster of sprockets in a range of sizes offering a multitude of gear ratios. The difference between the two is, a cassette slots onto the freehub, which has the ratchet built in and is then secured with a lockring, whereas a freewheel is a cluster of sprockets built around a ratchet and threads directly on to the hub. Cassettes and freewheels come in many ratios, close ratio is when the number of teeth increase in small increments of 1 or 2 at a time, whereas a wide ratio is when the teeth increase in larger increments of 3 or 4 at a time. Most systems will use a cassette hub as these allow for a wider bearing spacing and increased axle life, you can also fit a larger quantity of sprockets onto a cassette hub with 11 speed systems now becoming available. With cassettes you must use the appropriate spacing for your gear levers and rear mech, Shimano and Campagnolo are not interchangeable so you will need to match the cassette to your levers for smooth and precise shifting. Sram and Shimano chains and cassettes will work together as they use the same spacing.

SRAM PG1050 10 Speed Cassette 4.7 5 9 9

Good direct replacement for Ultegra 11-28 cassette I bought this as my standard 50/34 compact chainset and 11-28 casssette did not give low enough gears for serious hills. It fitted as a straight replacement for a Shimano cassette, no adjustment to chain and minimal adjustment to 'B' stop screw on the stanard Ultegra rear mech were all that were needed. I wouldn't use the big ring / big sprocket together, but I wouldn't do that anyway. Overall, a cheap and effective way to get sensible ratios onto your over-geared standard gearing. 02 September 2012

The better alternative to SRAM "Climbers kit" I haven't used this cassette yet, as I bought it together with a PC1051 chain and a Rival long cage derailleur, for a French Alps "Tour de Oven" this summer. But I calculated it with the cassette included in the SRAM climbers' kit (11-32) and found the values of this combo much more similar to my current 11-26 cassette. In fact, I will loose my 11 speed gear which I rarely use even on flat Danish roads, and gain a 28 (instead of 26) plus the 32 combination. With the 11-32 combo my combinations would loose several mid range combinations. CURRENT: 11 12 13 14 15 17 19 21 23 26 CLIMBERS KIT: 11 12 13 14 16 18 21 24 28 32 12-32: 12 13 14 15 17 19 22 25 28 32 I ended up with a Wiggle price for three three items ordered individually that wasn't higher than the Climbers' bundle. My bike's weight will increase (I have a complete SRAM Red gruppo), but will switch back when I come home. Remember to buy all three items together if you consider this "Contador setup" for steep climbs. 25 June 2012

I can now get up hills I bought this for my cross bike to replace the 11-27 cassette on the bike, It went straight on and now makes hills and racing through mud much easier. 10 January 2012

integrate transmission components When purchased my new bike was fitted with a mix of Sram chain wheels and changers but shimano 105 cassette. The Sram cassette improves the gear changes significantly. 10 August 2011

Apex cassette fitted to dura ace set up

can a Apex cassette be fitted to a shimano dura ace / 50-34 plus flightdeck
set up.
Recovering I hope from a few health problems and may find the lower gear options an advantage.

Apex 11-32 cassette works well with shimano, but you need a long cage derallieur and some extra length on the chain. You also have to do some small adjustments, but it is easy.

Unfortunately not, you would need a Apex derailleur to run with the larger ratio which would then need SRAM gear levers to operate.

Shimano cassettes and sram are both compatible with each other. The only other system that is not compatible is campanolo.

Could I run an XT rear derailleur with this casette in a 10 speed Shimano setup?

I understand that Sram kit is compatible with Shimano stuff, but not to what extent. In your answer to Simon8 you say that he'd need the Apex rear derailleur, I'm just wondering whether as well as keeping the Shimano chainset one could also substitute an XT rear mech e.g. M771/3? What is it about the PG1050 cassette that locks it in to the Apex mech?

Answer:

The only real problem with the cassette is the large ratio that is used with Apex systems. The 32 or 34t larger ring is generally unsupported by road derailleurs. You can use Apex or a MTB derailleur but you would need a 10 speed MTB derailleur, something that was previously unavailable. In theory you can use the Shimano Dyna-Sys 10 Speed Rear Derailleurs with a road system and a large 10 speed cassette, it would have to be Apex cassette though as Dyna Sys cassettes and chainsets are uni-directional. You would also need to use Shimano shifters because SRAM and Shimano use different cable pull ratio's for the rear mechs. In practice you could use a system consisting of a Apex cassette, Shimano 10 speed shifters, Shimano Dyna-sys rear derailleur. This should work and would provide large cassette capability to a road bike. Or just use a Apex rear derailleur if you have SRAM shifters.

Re the SRAM APex 11-32.

I believe that SRAM and Shimano are compatible...if so is there any reason why I cannot fit this cassette on to my existing 105 gears that has 53-39 chainring?

Dear Simon - I have just fitted a SRAM 11-32 block (with SRAM 10 speed chain) to a standard Ultegra 53/39 double and 105 derailleur. Works beautifully. My advice would be yes.

The cassette will work with a Shimano chain and so with the race chainset you have but you will need to use the Apex rear derailleur and in turn you will also need to use Sram gear levers. You could still keep your Shimano front mech and chainset though.

You can fit the larger ratio cassette to the wheels without a issue but the Rival rear derailleur will have a problem with cogs over 28t. You may need to also purchase the Apex rear derailleur to ensure compatibility with the larger ratio cassette
