About Chain Devices & Bash Guards

Chain devices fit in various places around a mountain bikes transmission and help to eliminate chain suck and chain slap when riding over rough terrain or landing from big drops. There are a number of fitments, some frames have ISCG mounts which are lugs on the drive-side of the bottom bracket shell and allow direct fitment to the frame, other chain devices fit in between the bottom bracket and frame and require a specific bottom bracket with a larger drive-side cup, and finally there is the type that clamp around the seat tube in place of the front mech. Also within this section you can find single speed chain tensioners which fit in place of the rear mech and take up any chain slack.There is also a selection of wheel tugs which stop you pulling your wheel over in horizontal dropouts.

Hopefully the only tension in your life. I was faced with a problem when converting my old road bike to single speed. Vertical dropouts. The Surly Singleator is really the only good chain tensioner out there. It's much quieter than other tensioners and it has a great feature that lets you reverse the spring inside to actually push up on the chain, covering more of your back sprocket. If you are converting a bike with vertical dropouts, it's the only way to go. 04 July 2010

Surly Singleator I bought this as part of my very first mountain bike singlespeed conversion. It was an expensive piece of kit, in my opinion, but I'd seen enough of my friends cursing at their singlespeed bikes after the chain flipped off to pursued me that it was worth spending a bit extra to ensure the chain ran straight and reliably. I was right – this piece of kit is expensive, but pure quality. A lot of thought has gone into making it fully adjustable where it needs to be and I was even able to change the internal spring with the alternative one supplied to ensure it pushed the chain to tension, rather than pulled it. The fact I had to buy an 18mm cone spanner to tension it was a bit of a pain, but I would still recommend it very highly to anyone. 17 November 2009

The great Jingleator This is one of those great products that does its job so well that it has spare time to entertain your ride. How so? That ever so playful 'jingle' of the jockey wheel when freewheeling, much like a cat with a bell. Think you will rest your weary singlespeedy legs down this descent, NO WAY! Forget angry bees chasing you, what about a tiger with a bell! 'Jingle' jangle, Jingle jingle all the way. Now this isnt loud, nor constant, more eerie and surprising. The Jingleator catches you unawares, tricking your mind that something is behind you, your legs into a dizzying spin to outpace the sabertooth with a bell. Robust, functional, and quiet This is by far the most functional chain tensioner that I have come across. The fact that you can change springs to vary between upwards or downwards pressure is great. I am running mine with the upwards setup and it is extremely quiet, and the chain never shifts. Just make sure you buy an 18mm cone wrench, otherwise it is almost impossible to fit. Also dont be afraid of tightening the spring nice and hard. 26 September 2012

Do you need to have your own mech hanger???

do i need my own mech hanger because it snapped so i am converting to singlespeed but do i need to buy a new hanger or will this fit straight on with no hanger if not is there any products that i can use that will save me buying a new hanger Thanks.

Unfortunately - Yes. You will need to buy a replacement hanger. This tensioner fits like any normal deraileur, i.e to the hanger.

Sorry - this fits on the hanger where the rear derailleur would normally go. So yes you do need to get another hanger.

You will need a mech hanger to fit this item, but i'm sure there are other tensioners which fit to the chain stay instead. These are fixed and not spring loaded.

This chain tensioner does require a derailleur hanger. If you do not have a mech hanger you may need to use a BB mount chain tensioner which requires a compatible bottom bracket for fitment or ISCG mounts

I want to fit an Alfine 8 Speed Hub to my Mercian Racing Frame whilst retaining the front double chainring set-up. Will this keep tension on the chain as I shift between rings?

No. A simple calculation: it must cope with half the variation in length of teeth chainrings. Say you have a 28t and 38t rings, so the arm would have to pull or free a distance of 5 or 6 chain links ((38 - 28)/2 plus a little bit more). As it is single armed, depends on the lenght of the arm (and tension and swing of the spring) but I think it could only cope with 2 or 3 links. That would limit you to, for example, 28t and 32t (4 teeth of difference between inner and outter ring) which would increase your gear range in only 14% (from 306% to 349% in an Alfine 8sp hub). It doesn't pay back the effort. To use double chainring you need a derailleur type chain tensioner.

I can't be sure but my guess is no. This is based on the fact that when mine wasn't at the right tightness it wiykd drop the chain intermittently. If it is too tight then it is hard to pedal. So even if it could stretch between the 2 positions I don't think you would get the correct tension in both. Having siad that you would have the front derailleur to act as a chain guide...
