Ever stomp on the pedals just to have your rear wheel slide forward in the dropouts and throw your chain? We have....using all kinds of hubs in all kinds of frames. There are lots of BMX-style tensioners out there, but few of them fit in our dropouts without some serious grinding. So, we decided to design a chain tensioner that will keep that rear wheel static in our dropouts...and most other kinds of rear-facing horizontal dropouts. Plus, ours will open up a bottle o' brew. The body of the Tuggnut is investment cast in stainless steel for durability. It features a thumbscrew, for tool-free adjustments, and 2 axle holes for a wide range of fore/aft wheel positions. The Tuggnut comes with an aluminum adapter that reduces the axle hole from 10mm to 6mm, so you can use it with quick-release axles, in addition to nutted axles. We sell it as a single, because you really only need one...on the drive side. But, if you absolutely need one on the non-drive side of your rig, to achieve balance in your life, you are in luck...the bottle opener works either way.

Chain devices fit in various places around a mountain bikes transmission and help to eliminate chain suck and chain slap when riding over rough terrain or landing from big drops. There are a number of fitments, some frames have ISCG mounts which are lugs on the drive-side of the bottom bracket shell and allow direct fitment to the frame, other chain devices fit in between the bottom bracket and frame and require a specific bottom bracket with a larger drive-side cup, and finally there is the type that clamp around the seat tube in place of the front mech. Surly Tuggnut Chain Tensioner 4.4 5 42 42

Spot on piece of kit Wanted a chain tensioner for my Specialised P1 jump bike, and a bit of online research came up with this. Fantastic bit of kit - simple, very well made, tough and very easy to fit (literally took minutes) - and so far has done all it promised. Looks like it would fit most bikes, and only one is needed, on the drive side, of course. In fact, it's such a nice looking thing it's almost too good to go on the bike - even got a bottle opener on it, which I'm sure will be put to good use at some stage! Downside is that it's a little on the expensive side, but you pay for quality and functionality, so I can live with that. If you want a top quality chain tensioner with a bit of style - get this! 15 December 2009

Heavy, but it works. This chain tensioner performs a very simple job effectively. There are cheaper and lighter products around that do the same thing, but this one is rock solid and it looks good. The bottle opener function also works, in case you're ever dying of sobriety during a ride. 10 November 2012

The tugnut that's built like a tank! I bought 2 of these for my Surly Moonlander. I run a rear deurailleur but I needed to set the axle back in the dropouts to avoid the disk binding the rear brake caliper, so every time I put the back wheel back in I had to faff around getting the wheel alignment right. With these things now set, I can take the rear wheel in and out easily and I know I have perfect position and alignment every time. They also stop the risk of the wheel slipping forward in the dropouts. Just a couple of things to bear in mind with regards to fitment and compatibility: 1: They are thick pieces of metal and the QR washers add to the thickness even more so a standard rear (135mm axle spacing) QR isnt long enough if you want to use 2 of them. You'll need a QR to fit a 145mm axle spacing for this setup to work with a 135mm hub. (I think 145's are used on tandems). 2: Shadow-type mechs will foul the bottom bottle opener prongs. I've ground my driveside tugnut flat on the bottom to prevent this. This might sound brutal but being stainless a fine file is all thats needed to give an nice finish to the edge, and they still look smart. These points aside, they look good and really add to the boutique look of the bike. 03 August 2012

How much over hung is needed?

My Dolan Track BIke (Pre-Cursa) doesn't have much 'over hang' on the wheel hubs bolts. Can I still use this?

My guess would be yes.

I fitted mine on a single speed that had wheel hub bolts that were just flush with the bolts.

Admittedly the wheel hub bolt on the side I fitted the chain Tug doesnt now sit flush with the nut but it is still safe and secure. approximately about 2mm of Nut sticking out.
