Takes training to a new dimension
I am a seasoned cyclist but have always struggled to motivate myself to jump onto the turbo or rollers. Well all has changed now that I took the jump and purchased the Tacx Genius. After an initial blip when the motor brake kept blowing fuses., this was quickly replaced by wiggle , I have had no problems will the system.
The VR world is interesting to use and the Tacx films add another dimension, have just ridden the tour of Flanders. The google earth , with the extra licence is a revaluation especially riding routes I have captured on my garmin you can also download other people's routes so you can ride anywhere in the world.
The riding sensation in particular the climbs are reasonably realistic when you correctly set the motor brake which even the girlfriend can do now.
The time just flies by and their are plenty of options to target your training objectives. All in all so glad I decided to purchase and would recommend this product.
Must go now off to Italy to climb motterone which is amazing in google earth 3D. Ciao

Very disappointed
i bought this product 3 months ago, paid 1100gbp for it and so far have been very very disappointed.
the actual hardware, i.e. the frame itself is good quality and looks nice. i give them that. however, what really lets this product down is the software. it is a complete joke and very disruptive to a training session.
during use, over a 1hr training session, the software will crash from between 1-3 times. everytime it crashes, you need to reset it. you cannot run the turbo trainer without the software, as it is needed to program it. so right now, i cannot even ditch the software and just train. there are free software that is more stable than the tacx software. in my opinion, tacx should not even charge for this software.
as well as crashing, the software does not cater for 1024x768 resolutions. but no where is that stated. just does not work and does not fully display the screen.
this issue is not just with me. my friend also uses the software, although on the vortex model, and his crashes as much as mine.
i would say, 4-5 out of 10 training sessions, the software crashes and interupts my training. i am using version 4.4 of the software, the latest. before i bought this product, there were a lot of reviews of version 3.6 online, saying how rubbish it was. i think version 4.x is not a new product, but an extension of 3.6, so it does not have a strong foundation to start with.
a friend of mine is seeking a top end turbo. initially 3 months ago i suggested this one to him so that the 3 of us can use the multiplayer. i have now recommended the elite brand to him.
on another note, the blacktracx steering frame works ok. its a little stiff, so when in the vr, turning is not that straight forward and takes getting used to.
if tacx can get their software sorted, then this can be an excellent product, but right now, its a paperweight half the time and does not provide a consistent training as marketed. their web site also states they are not responsible for the reliability of their software as they have no control over each individuals hardware. thats is just a poor show of taking responsibility of their own product.
tacx, sort it out!

Fabulous trainer but hard to set up
Once you are setup and have navigated the software and its quirks, this trainer gives a great experience that is really quite addictive and fun. Very highly recommended.

Very impressive, entertaining, but a few glitches
I bought the Tacx i-Genius Multiplayer after 4 years of using the Fortius Multiplayer. I was very pleased with the Fortius and was pursuaded to get the i-Genius (with Version 4 software) by the promise of better graphics, GPS/Google Earth features and different VR routes, including a much enhanced option to create your own routes and ‘free ride’ using the steering unit to go where I wanted in the virtual reality worlds they provide. First of all, let me say that I have never used the internet Multiplayer option. Since I am almost guaranteed to be older/slower than other on-line users it has never attracted me much. As for the rest, here goes:
The VR imagery is massively better than in Fortius. If you look at your monitor from a few feet away, rather than at the tip of your nose, it really does look just like a photograph. It only starts to get a bit flaky when passing it close by, e.g. curb side.
The option to create a riding partner is NOT as good as in Fortius. I got quite attached to the avatars that Fortius generated in order to encourage you along. There is an equivalent feature in i-Genius and it does generate ‘ghosts’, but these are just that, transparent ghosts which are not required to keep you company on your ride, so if you have a slow day, you’ll be on your own in the VR!
Software updating is much easier than previously and is now what you would expect from modern software.
Genius has lost the amusing ‘crash’ feature that was in Fortius, so there is no penalty to clipping the curb. In Fortius, you had to really concentrate on keeping in the road, not so with Genius, where the software basically channels you along the road. I guess Genius is more a training tool now, and less a VR computer game!
Using a pulse meter transmitter is a bit of an issue. I-Genius uses the ANT+ WiFi protocol. Standard coded polar transmitters are supposed to work with Genius, but they don’t on my system. It does seem to be a bit random, according to the Tacx chat room chatter. I am going to buy a Tacx ANT+ HR transmitter and be done with it!
Version 4 software is still only a year or so old, and is not without its bugs. In my case, the steering calibration won’t stick after software closedown. It’s trivially easy to redo the calibration at start up, but should you have to? Apart from the odd incorrect direction arrow in the VR, there’s nothing else of note (in my case).
Real Life video is really good, and much better that the basic player that was in Fortius. I certainly intend to buy a few discs and re-live some of my mountain adventures. Note that there is a declared software bug that prevents Google Street View working in parallel with RL video. Hopefully, this will be sorted out soon.
Injecting a route via either Google Earth (you have to buy an annual licence, $30) or via an imported .GPX file from your satnav is dead easy, but without Street View is a bit boring to see. You are either following a 2D map or are surrounded by the abstract art of a close-up Google satellite view.
The Genius bike mount is noticeably less stable than the Fortius one, which is the classic Tacx design, so care is advised when honking up a gradient.
The ‘BlackTrack’ steering unit is a masterpiece of plastic moulding but I don’t think it’s as good as the old (metal) Fortius equivalent. The only advantage of BlackTrack is that you don’t have to drop the front wheel off your bike. On the negative side, the unit’s steerer is a bit stiff and sticky. Apparently, some grease improves things but you have to disassemble to apply, compromising your warranty. However, the steerer feature is less important with Genius, as mentioned above.
Finally, gradient generation on the back wheel brake is just a little suspect (same as Fortius?), despite performing ‘motor calibration’. The VR worlds typically have a maximum gradient of around 7.5 degrees and these seem just a bit too easy, with associated inflated power readings…. Does this matter? Not really to me.
By the way, you really do need a full-on, 64 bit, Windows 7, 3D gaming-level PC if you want the full range of VR imagery. I’m sure it will work on a lesser machine, but you will definitely not see i-Genius at its best if your PC is not up to it.
Is i-Genius worth the money, particularly if you already have something like Fortius? Only you can say, but I am pleased with it, despite the odd glitch and bug, and time passes really quickly when you are riding through the VR scenery or at the velodrome.
By-the-way, Wiggle delivered it in their usual efficient style within 36 hours of order, though I did pay for Express Delivery!
