About Rim Brakes

Rim brakes for bikes use the sidewall of the rim to reduce speed, this is done by a pad on either side applying friction against the rim, which reduces your momentum. Road brake callipers have been redesigned over the years and now use a system called 'dual pivot' which means the brake arms pivot off centre to apply a higher amount of pressure on the rim to increase your stopping power. Most manufacturers use dual pivot callipers on the front and rear, but some Campagnolo brakes use a traditional single pivot on the rear to 'balance' the braking power, the logic behind this is that as you brake your weight shifts on to the front of the bike and as much as 75% of the braking force is applied to the front.

If you like your canti's to seize up buy these I've been through a couple of pairs on the front and both have seized up on my cyclocross bike, got maybe 200 km out of the last pair, rear ones are still going though and I like them performance I just wish they would last more than 4 months at a time. Going to try something else next. 10 September 2012

Great Value Don't have the same prestige as the slightly higher priced Avids, but I've just had better luck with them. Feel quite snappy, do the job well and have never siezed up on me (unlike 2 sets of Avids). Only con is the spring tension screw takes a v small allen key. Smaller than would be on most multi-tools. 04 November 2010

Another Great Purchase These brakes are another quality product from Tektro. I use these on my Cyclocross bike which I use to commute to and from work. They are easy to setup and perform brilliantly. 25 August 2010

Cool Cantis I bought these to replace an old set of Dia Compe on my tourer. There was nothing with my old cantis, I just wanted the greater choice of brake blocks available with the V-brake type fitting. As it turns out I needed this choice a lot sooner than I expected. The blocks that came with these brakes started ripping chunks of aluminium out of my rims! I changed the blocks immediately for some ashimas and now I'm happy. Performance wise, these brakes are excellent - very powerful but controllable. It was a bit of a squeeze fitting them to my bike because the boss spacing on my old bike is on the narrow side, but these brakes are adjustable enough to cope well. 19 June 2009
