About Seat Posts

A good quality seat post will save weight and hold your saddle securely. Seatposts are made in various materials, alloy and carbon being the two most common, alloy posts are lightweight, durable and cost efficient, while carbon posts are the popular choice for top end machines. Seat posts vary in where they hold the saddle relative to their own centre line so make sure you have enough adjustment on your saddle rails to allow for this or you could end up with your saddle too far forwards. A seat post needs to fit your frame exactly and are measured by as little as 0.2mm. When choosing a new one, either read off the measurement from your old seat post or measure it carefully with a vernier calliper. Make sure you lubricate the frame (unless they're carbon fibre) before insertion or you'll struggle to get it out again.

Thomson only make stems and posts and they're some of the best available. The Elite has a single-piece machined shaft/head with Suntour's classic XC Pro twin-bolt design.

This gives complete control over the angle of the twin saddle cradles, and although the bolts are 4mm - instead of the more usual 5mm - we've never had any trouble with them rounding or shearing off, despite years of using Thomson posts. They've also proved incredibly strong at the same time as being light enough for cross-country racing. The size range is all-encompassing, and there are bent-shaft versions giving an inch of lay-back at the head.

In conclusion...

Super strong, super light and available in every size imaginable. King of Seatposts.

Awesome Seatpost I'm in serious danger of sounding like I'm trying to sell you this seatpost, but I bought a Thomson for a few reasons. I've just bought a Felt Trailshot & wanted a decent 410mm post. I heard the Thomson was really strong & weighing in at just over 16 stones - that's what I needed. The bottom clamp is part of the post & sits directly on top of the post - making it very strong, so no bonding to come lose, & no risk of it snapping off the back. I went for the setback post to give me extra top tube length, so I could ride a smaller size frame & run a short stem without feeling cramped. The clamp is longer than on other posts, so offers more support to the saddle rails - reducing the risk if bending them if like me you fit the saddle in a rearward position. Perfect for sharp-handling, short Hardtail Trail bikes. 09 July 2010

Thomson engineering at it's finest Thomson products are simply amazing - their stems and posts are machined from single billets of Alu to give unbeatable strength and the quality of the finish is absolutely devine - faultless and one for the perfectionist. Fairly light and very strong - looks brilliant especially if matched with a Thomson stem. I can't fault it and I'd say good value for money considering what you get and Wiggle's low prices. The best alluminium seatpost This is, in my honest opinion, the best seat post ever made. May be some Syncros or Ringlé was like this one, but unfortunately they are no longer available. In Italy we like Thomson seat posts and stems too: they are perfect for the best alluminum frames like Klein and Cannondale, but I love them also with titanium frame. The building quality is at the top, the seat post is stiffness, and have a great look (the silver one is my favourite) with graphics laser logo. No problem with the saddle installation and the adjustement of the slope. A thomson seat post is like diamond: E' PER SEMPRE!!! 11 November 2009

expensive but top quality because of my size and frame I ride with alot of seat post exposed (all of a 400mm post) and as i am a heavy, powerful rider (i have broken a couple of cheap posts) i need something strong, That means heavy or expensive... Although this post is pricey the machining and quality is fantastic, it's seriously light but i don't doubt that it is 40% stronger than the competition. A good investment if your a fat boy... 21 October 2009

Is it possible to use this seatpost to tilt forward rather than backwards?

I would like to try and get a better position on my tri bars. I currently find the top tube too long. I would like to find a seat post that will get me further forward. If I use this seat post will there still be sufficient adjustment to get the seat angle correct?

the post will keep you above the down tube or further back, if your reach is too long you should look at a shorter stem, there should be a slight bend to the elbow when seated.

We do not recommend that you turn setback seatposts in order to get a setforward position. The posts are not designed to take stresses in this way and it could also damage your frame where the stresses are levering the frame in the opposite direction from normal.

Yes - you'll need to flip the top clamp assembly too, but it can definitely be done. The offset is about 17mm as memory serves, so you'll move about 34mm forward.

No, I can't advise that you reverse the saddle to give a set forward. The post is designed to take stresses in one direction and so is your frame, applying pressure in the opposite direction could cause issues.

You will need to ensure that you purchase the 27mm seat post. You will not be able to use either the 27.2 or 26.8mm seat posts with your frame.

There is a "front" and a "back" of the clamp, so you'd have to turn it around as well. However, plenty of movement both ways so don't see why it wouldn't work but haven't ever tried...

At the Thomson website (I have attached a copy of the Thomson drawing) there is an additional size, Black 27.2 x 330mm / 10º , SP-E101SB, which is not listed in your "Buy Now". Can you source this size for me?
