- MTB
The design team for the new Thomson X4 had a tough goal: make a stem better than the Thomson Elite 25.4. Early tests showed us that our competitors’ 31.8 stems were heavier and weaker than our Thomson Elite 25.4. At Thomson the X4 was not done until it was stronger, lighter and longer lived than the legendary Thomson Elite.
The Thomson X4 stem allows you to realize the benefits of stiffer forks and stiffer 31.8 bars. X4 offers precise steering, tracking, and more control while riding, all wrapped up in a beautiful design.
The Thomson X4 is stronger and 30 grams lighter than the Thomson Elite 25.4 mountain stem. It features a traditional steerer clamp that is shaped to save weight and to be knee friendly. X4 is absolutely the best combination of strength and weight available. Thomson stems are the strongest in the industry, meaning freeride and downhill riders can run Thomson confidently.

Magazine reviews for Thomson Elite X4 Oversized Mtb Stem
Review from Singletrack
I've had a regular sized Thomson Elite stem on my bike for a couple of years now and it's performed without fault. No bar slip, no seized bolts, , no creaking, , not noticeably flexy - all you can ask for in a stem really...all the bolts and etched logo's still look as good as new too, which is nice. This new oversized 31.8mm Elite X4 has behaved pretty much exactly the same.
In conclusion...
Thomson Stems are class-leading lumps of loveliness although they are rather pricey, but if you want the best, I guess you have to pay.

Review from What MTB
We loved Hope's latest block as it's tough yet light enough to cover all types of riding, however, completely re-designed for oversized bars, with a new conventional band clamp system, nothing beats Thomsons usual meticulous machining, nothing beats its combination of stiffness and strength either
In conclusion...
Hail the Elite X4

Review from MBR
Machined from 7000 series aluminium the Thomson is one of the best machined stems on the market and despite the old school construction is a great stem for UK use. All the allen bolts get a corrosion resistant coating and the matching threaded holes in the body of the stem are anodised all the way through to prevent them binding. The ribbed surface increases fatigue life and is super-durable, the gloss black anodising rarely dulls on Thomson stems.
In conclusion...
Not the lightest or stiffest stem on test but details like the chamfered edges, precise machining, excellent finish and plated bolts are signs of pure quality.

Review from MBR
Most other stem manufacturers have just made the clamp larger to accomodate the 31.8mm bars, but not Thomson. It designed the new oversized Elite X4 from the ground up. Thomson claims the new stem is stronger than it's current Elite - a bold claim - but what makes it all the more amazing is that the new stem is also 30g lighter. This is down to the traditional twin-bolt steerer clamp, which replaces the expander on the Elite. The back end is also cutaway to save weight and the bolts are recessed to be knee friendly. The faceplate features Thomson's distinctive four-bolt pattern and the bolts are coated to stop corrosion.
In conclusion...
Most other stem manufacturers have just made the clamp larger to accomodate the 31.8mm bars, but not Thomson.

Review from Bikeradar
The ultimate money-no-object mountain bike stem choice for most people we asked, Thomson's X4 really is an elite piece.
Considering the number of CNC machined stems on the market, the fact that the meticulously sculpted and scooped shape of the Elite still looks gorgeous is remarkable.
It works as well as it looks too, with the smooth transitions and internal shaping spreading stress without adding weight. It matches anything we've ever tested for stiffness in workshop tests - including downhill stems twice the weight – and you can really feel that accuracy on the trail.
The design changes to an even tougher block pattern in the shorter reach sizes, making it first choice on many downhill/freeride bikes too.
The super-fine sizing range means you can pick the perfect length for your steering needs, while the knee-friendly scooped out steerer clamp with sideholes, laser etched logos and torque settings gets rid of all the squeak and seizure problems of the old internal wedge designs.
The only downside is the premium price, but it's a price many riders are happy to pay. Make sure you check the bolts though, as we've seen a few examples with uneven heads, spoiling an otherwise perfect product.
In conclusion...
Expensive but still the king of stems, in sizes to suit everyone
