With the bitter weather we've been having, and to avoid icy roads, I have become re-acquainted with my old turbo trainer. It's not the nicest way to spend a training session and can increase the wear of your winter treads, so replacing the tyre with one specific to the job has its benefits. Vittoria's home trainer tyre does everything it should, the tread pattern helps dissipate heat and the constant drone of the tyre on roller is substantially reduced.

The only issue that may arise is if you only have one pair of wheels – who wants to continually swap tyres? The bright red also works well to let you know you have a turbo tyre on; you don't want to be riding down the road on one of these, it'll be like riding on ice!

Great on my trainer First time I have purchased a dedicated trainer tyre after just using old tyres on a spare wheel in the past. This tyre does not shed any residue like the old tyres did and runs much quieter. Even my wife noticed this fact. 13 July 2010

Saves money! This trainer tyre saves your expensive road tires! A lot harder wearing than road tires. Still get rubber flinging off but way more hard wearing than a road tyre. Can't use it on the road so you have to either have a spare wheel for the trainer or keep swapping tyres. 07 July 2010

Best turbo tyre I've found Not only was this tyre significantly cheaper than any other turbo tyre I could find it also performers brilliantly. I was prepared to accept a poorer performance given the price but have been amazed - its lasting well (I have used my turbo most days during the past snowy weather rather than risk broken bones) and is quiet. I like things on my bike to match and for it to look good at all times, the red matches the white/black/red frame and also the red front tyre. Brilliant all round - literally! 09 December 2010

Spin to your hearts content Prior to buying this turbo specific tyre I was using continental 4 seasons, which worked well enough. However, they are expensive and should really be put to good use outside in this super british winter ;-) I looked at the conti turbo tyre (yellow) and this one from vittoria. The smaller price tag persuaded me in the end. Riding on the turbo is no different, but this tyre does run smoothly and makes a bit less noise. Now this doesn't really bother me, as I don't hear anything other than Led Zeppelin on the iPod, but it is of benefit to those not on the turbo! Getting the vittoria zaffiro pro home trainer tyre and a second (inexpensive) rear wheel has enabled me to just swop out the wheel when I want to spin, rather than having to change tyre each time. 29 December 2009

Is it customary to fit a turbo-trainer specific tyre onto a spare wheel?

I've just bought a trainer and have heard that with regular use they can grind down your rear tyre, sometimes to the extent where rubber is deposited all over the floor.
This item seems like a logical choice but I can't be doing with swapping the tyres over each time I use the trainer!

I was told yes. If you use your regular tire be prepared to buy another quickly because of the heat generated by the trainer wheel. And apparently the sound level is lower with this compound vs. a regular tire.

yes, a turbo specific tyre is made of a different compound so more hard wearing. it may be advisable to purchase a cheaper rear wheel , and fit it with one of the turbo trainer tyres, much quicker than swapping a tyre over each time.

There are two sizes of this tyre, the 700x23c tyre is for standard road bikes. The 26x1.1 tyre is for 26" wheeled bike such as mountain bikes.

Can anyone recommend a cheap wheel to go with this tyre?

I need a wheel to fit my Carrera Virago, 10 speed back wheel. Want to use it on a turbo trainer with a 700x23 Zaffiro Pro Home Trainer tyre. Can anyone recommend one?

Not looking for aything expensive - just something at the bottom of the price range I can lob on the bike when it gets icy!

The trainer tyres aren't necessary but it does help to reduce wear, noise and heat. You can safely use your normal road tyres on rollers though.

Can I get a 700 x 25 trainer tyre?.

As a relative newbie to road cycling, the whole wheel / tyre sizing system is making me bleed at the ears. I'm considering a turbo for using over the winter, and want a trainer tyre to fit my 700 x 25 wheel. I can't seem to find one anywhere that fits this measurement. Am I missing something?

I ride a standard Giant Defy 3 that usually takes 700 x 25 tyres. I then found out that these wheels also take 700 x 23 tyres so I bought the Zaffiro 700 x 23 trainer tyre and it fits perfectly.
