The best place to carry weight is around your waist or hips. This enables you to retain full upper-body mobility, with the added benefit of not getting a sweaty back. Small hip packs are fine for energy bars, whereas a larger model can take most things you need for a full day out. Water-bottle holders are a good idea, too, especially when it's hot.
