Very useful product After reading some of the unfair negative reviews I thought I should share my positive experience of this product.. I am a very experienced road cyclist. I have competed in numerous road races and countless time trials. I don’t compete anymore, but I cover about 150 miles every week commuting to work. I would never have thought of using a mirror like this until a recent incident. I was hit from behind by a car. After 25 years of cycling this has never happened to me before. Needless to say it shattered my confidence. I was on a narrow stretch of road, and the driver claims she didn’t see me because the sun was low in the sky. Fortuitously I was really hugging the verge at the time, and only suffered a glancing blow. Normally I ride out from the verge a little more (about 40 cm), but had I been this far out I would have been killed (the car was doing ~50mph). All this got me thinking…. maybe with a mirror I could make sure that I was always giving myself the greatest margin in potentially dangerous scenarios. So I bought the Zefal Z-eye mirror. The mirror works well and is pretty rugged. DON’T trust the supplied sticky patch to reliably adhere the mirror stalk to your helmet, this will fail in time. Use a couple of cable ties to secure the mounting bracket to your helmet. The view behind is good, but you need to position the mirror upwards and outwards. To achieve this you should angle the stalk upwards.. this way there is no blind spot in your forward view, and you can scan behind whilst in a low racing tuck. You need to angle the mirror outwards a little otherwise you will see too much of your shoulder rather than the road behind. To scan behind you then just need to rotate your head a wee bit to the right and dart your eyes up and to the right. With practice it really does become second nature. On the downside the mirror is not super robust. It is more than robust enough for riding, but don’t expect to just throw your helmet in a kit bag and for it not to break off. The stalk is easily detached from the helmet mount, and I do this before packing my lid. Also, I doubt it would survive a crash, but it’s cheap enough not to worry too much about that. It is very useful in all manner of situations where it is very awkward to actually look behind. There is no doubt that this mirror allows you to very quickly and easily see behind you. If, like me, you are short sighted and wear spectacles then actually turning around to look is that much more awkward as you can’t look out the corner of your eye (as you’re not looking through your specs!). Here are some scenarios where I find the mirror especially useful. Scenario 1. Fast decent behind a slow moving car… you can easily scan behind you whilst simultaneously focusing on the car in front and the road. Scenario 2. Narrow road with oncoming traffic… you can’t definitely hear if anything is coming from behind. With this mirror you can easily scan behind and decide to either hug the verge or signal to the driver behind to slow down and move out a little in a defensive manner. Scenario 3. Approaching a multiple lane roundabout at speed…. you can easily and quickly scan behind whilst giving your main focus to the traffic that is already on or entering the roundabout. Scenario 4. Out of the saddle climbing a steep narrow road…. you can easily scan behind to see if that approaching engine noise is a juggernaught or a scooter! I thoroughly recommend this, particularly if you ride busy roads (who doesn’t these days?). Any rider would benefit from this, and it does make you safer by allowing you to make better decisions more quickly because you have more information about what is behind. 10 July 2010

Daytime wonder It works surprisingly well during daytime when there is plenty of light. Found it very difficult to see otherwise; especially in the evening. It starts to squeeze my temple uncomfortably after a while, but that probably depends on the helmet used (Giro Monza) as well as the shape of the head. 13 July 2010

Nice idea, but..... It was a good idea and I wanted it to work. Having a rear view mirror is a necessary safety feature for riding on todays roads. Normal mirrors poke outside of the handlebars and make it difficult to lean the bike against a wall or go through doors, so putting the mirror on your helmet sounded a good idea. However, the best ideas always have some drawbacks and in my case two things really prevented it from working, The first was that I need reading glasses and this made the mirror too close to my eyes and therefore I couldn't focus on it without my glasses! You can't ride a bike in reading glasses! I tried my bi-focal glasses but as the mirror is attached to the helmet when you move your head up and down to focus near and far the mirror moved at the same time, so foiled again! The second reason is that with the roads in my area being so poor and bumpy the mirror bumped and jiggled so much that I'm sure if I could see the reflection it would have been blurred most of the time. If you have good eyes and smooth roads then this may be the product fror you! 09 July 2010

I need better eye sight it's a useful tool when riding alone, but it is limited on country roads, with the movement due to uneven road surfaces (making vision unsteady), and you don't notice vehicles until they are very close to passing. Defintely not to be used in a pack! 07 July 2010

Yes, but you need to buy extra velcro tape so that it can be stuck to the opposite side of your helmet.

yes & no.yes,you just have to improvise.no,coz once sticky bit is attached to helmet you cant take it off.but then use your imagination- use another sticky bit and turn mirror around...

Since the zefal Z-eye mirror is helmet mounted on a velcro attachment, as long as you have a velcro patch on both sides of your helmet, or can move the patch to the other side of the helmet, you can easily mount it on either side.
I did find that the velcro on its own does have a problem with grip, it will keep it in place, but rough surfaces do make it jiggle loose. I therefore mounted mine with a zip lock cable-tie as an added measure.

You would have to unstick the velcro tab and stick it to the other side, probably wouldn't work for too long as it's not the stickiest thing to begin with. My advice would be to buy some more velcro and glue some on either side of your helmet.

The Z-eye can be swapped between sides, though would recommend attaching second piece of sticky-back velcro to opposite side of helmet - peeling off original, multiple times, not a good idea.

Yes , quite easily. Mine came set up for for riding on the continent and I switched it to GB conditions. The only problem you may have is that the small piece of sticky velcro that you stick inside your helmet may become less sticky if you change it to often.
