Rated 3 out of 5 by from Value disc brake, replacement for a failed one They work, but require fairly frequent simple adjustment. They are not very robust for daily usage and hence regular adjustment, as the inner adjuster nut and plastic cap seem to burr easily and become unusable. This was a replacement for one that came with my bike, and has only been in (weekday daily) use for a couple of years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor performer and endless faff I've been disappointed with these from the word go. I've wide experience with both calliper brakes and hydraulic discs and frankly these underperform compared to both. The design seems fundamentally flawed: they are the only brakes I've ever used which don't have two-sided activation. These have one fixed pad so when you apply the lever the movable pad has to deform the rotor to engage with the fixed one. It's no wonder I spend so much time fiddling to try and stop them rubbing and get decent braking performance into the bargain.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Functional but looking dated When compared to the new crop of disc brake calipers - these look decidedly dated. They look chunky and haven't changed much (if any) in design in the last 15 years. The road calipers use slightly different pull ratio to the mountain bike ones - but other than that - they are the same brake. I've always had good performance from BB5s, very similar to BB7s in braking power. The difference being the inboard pad is fixed on the BB5 brake and a little less weather proofing. There is a knack to setting these up - inboard first - followed by outboard pad. A bit of trial and error to. But once bedded in - these have been very reliable and fuss free.

Brake lever compatibility

Hi, I'd appreciate some advice on what brake levers are compatible with the Avid BB5 mechanical disk brake range. I would like to mount simple pull levers on the tops in addition to the STI brake/shifters. Is this possible with the Avid BB5 Road version or do I have to use the BB5 MTB version? Many thanks for your help. Thom

You can use the levers linked below along with the STI levers and the road calipers together without issue.

Does this come complete with rotor, bolts and mounting kit?

This is the caliper only. The rotor and the mounting adapters are not included.

is the 160 - front /rear universal?
