Description

The Bont Vaypor+ Road Shoe features Bont's innovative carbon technology which ensures the highest strength to weight ratio and lowest stack height possible so you get a better connection to the pedal and minimum power loss in a lightweight package. The upper has been crafted from kangaroo leather, known for its light weight, high strength and durability, and the cowhide inner ensures a luxuriously supple, comfortable fit.

If you are a road cyclist who demands the best from yourself and your kit, the Bont Vaypor+ Road Shoe delivers a luxury fit and feel, great performance and beautiful design in a range of colour to suit your individual style.

Bont Technology

Anti Stretch

Between the outer leather and the liner, Bont has added their exclusive anti-stretch material to stop the cycling shoe from stretching over time. This material has similar strength characteristics to Kevlar. It is stitched to the outer leather and bonded to the liner so it can never move or be removed; it becomes part of the cycling shoes structure. This layer assits in pedalling efficiency by maintaining a supportive structure over the top of the foot in the upward part of the pedal stroke.

Carbon Fiber

Bont carbon fiber is sourced exclusively from the world's #1 carbon manufacturer, Toray of Japan. The base of the Vaypor+ is made by hand utilizing uni-directional carbon fiber which is embedded with epoxy thermo setting resin. The fibers are hand laid in the matrix according to the strain they will have to bear. The Vaypor+ utilizes unidirectional carbon fiber allowing Bont to create a performance cycling shoe with very specific strength characteristics based on stress points in cycling. As unidirectional carbon absorbs less resin then cross weave fibers, it also assists in the weight reduction of the cycling shoes.

Last Design

A last is a replica of a foot that the cycling shoe is built around. Last makers do not make cycling shoe lasts. They only make shoe lasts so perfecting a cycling shoe last requires a great deal of expertise in functional biomechanics and ongoing research. Bont has been perfecting their performance footwear lasts since 1975 and the process is ongoing. They place more importance and thus place more effort into their last than any other cycling shoe brand and it is the reason that Bont cycling shoes continue to be a leader in providing the most functional and correct anatomical support to cyclists than any other brand on the market. Their motto in terms of cycling shoe fit is simple, "We make shoes for cycling, not walking."

Padding

The Vaypor+ utilises closed cell memory foam that will not retain water which means the shoe does not gain weight during wet conditions. Sweat, which can cause the materials of the shoe to degrade, is not absorbed which prolongs the life of the shoes.

TPU Toe Protector

The toe protector not only protects the front area of the shoe from wheel rub and impact, but also houses ventilation holes for improving airflow through the shoe.

Heat Moulding

Bont's proprietary resin has been developed and perfected over 36 years to be an extremely stiff resin that becomes pliable at relatively low temperatures. Unlike other shoes which are moldable only in select locations, all Bont cycling shoes can be molded over the entire chasis providing you with not only with the most anatomically designed cycling shoe on the market today, but also with the ability to fine tune the fit of the entire shoe to give a customised fit.

Medial Longitudinal Arch Support

Structural medial longitudinal arch support is provided in all models to stop over pronation of feet.

Over pronation is one of the main contributors to incorrect tracking of knees during the pedalling motion due to internal rotation of tibia and femur. This can result in knee injuries.

In addition, the rotation of tibia/femur can cause the pelvis to tilt resulting in lower back strain.

Anatomical Forefoot Shape

Conventional cycling shoes offer a “dress shoe” type shaping. Although highly aesthetic this will cause the toes along with the metatarsals to be overly constricted, compressing the nerves between the metatarsals which often results in the common "hot foot" sensation.

Bont cycling shoes anatomical shaping allows the foot to function in its most efficient and anatomically correct position. The foot is supported in its endeavour to relax through the metatarsal joints allowing the pedalling force to be spread across the greatest possible surface area.

Anatomical Heel Cup

The anatomical heel cup shaping of Bont cycling shoes provides increased stability during the pull through stage of the pedalling stroke. This stabilisation is achieved without any mechanical operation or over tightening of straps/laces allowing for increased comfort and blood circulation.

Lateral Forefoot Support

Bont’s lateral forefoot support ensures neutral positioning of the forefoot and alleviates common issues associated with over pronation and supination. These issues often result in incorrect tracking of knees causing injuries along with hip and lower back pain

Bont Size Chart To find your size, place a tape measure and piece of paper on a flat surface up against a wall. With your heel approximately 1mm away from the wall, stand on the tape measure, slowly roll your weight forward and onto the forefoot while keeping your heel firmly connected to the floor. Look down and take the measurement from the wall to your longest toe. Record the length. With your foot still in place, use a straight edge in a vertical position and place it up against the widest part of both sides of the foot. Measure the width across the widest part of your foot and record the number in millimetres. Repeat this step for both feet.

If you're unable to do this yourself, have someone take the measurements while you focus on keeping the entire foot connected to the ground at all times.

Once the measurements have been taken, first use the horizontal MM scale on the size chart to find your size (length). The MM sizes on the chart are the exact length of the last that Bont uses to build the shoes. If you find that your MM size is exactly the same as a value on the size chart, you may want to select one size bigger to give your toes some room. For example, you measure your feet and the length of your left and right feet are 278mm and 280mm respectively. If you were browsing for a Helix, Riot+ Series, Vaypor S or other models from the top line size chart you would be exactly size 44.5. However, as stated, this is the exact length of the shoe last and unless you like your shoes to be very tight, you may wish to add an additional 5-8mm onto your measurements to account for toe room and sock thickness. This will result in the most appropriate size. In this case, you would select a size 45.

Following the selection of size (length), move downward to select the most appropriate width. Bont recommends adding 1mm to find the most appropriate width. For example, you are looking at a Vaypor S and have determined your best shoe size is 45 – accounting for the additional length added to your foot measurements. Your widths are 105mm and 107mm respectively and so, with an additional 1mm added, you would still fit within the Standard Fit. If your feet measured narrowed than 100mm or wider than 110mm, you would consider Narrow Fit or Wide Fit.

Customer Reviews

Bont Vaypor+ Road Shoe is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by RBSingapore from Well-made shoes Stiff chassis, well-made, great materials, nice wide toe box. Boa system works well, with even distribution over top of foot. Ridden over long distances and comfortable, no hot spots. Very expensive but looks durable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by StevieW from Quality shoe Very well made cycling shoe. The leather is just lovely. Twin boas means almost total control over tightness. Only drawback is that the heel cup is heavily sculpted, with much more room below the lip of the heel. That may aid fit once the shoe is on, but can make it hard to insert the foot in the first place. Make sure you have a decent shore horn to go with the shoes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Yerbs from Most comfi bike shoes ever! Massively impressed with these. I suffer Mortimers Neruoma caused by narrow fitting shoes over the years (blame the Italians!) There's much more room in the spacious toe box so no more hot foot, and i haven't felt arch ache either. The stiff sole realy does improved power transfer compared to all other shoes I've worn. Great delivery and well priced for a quality product. I'll never buy anything but Bonts again!!! Bonts web site is spot on for fitting measurements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by JBKNYC from Wide Toe box, custom fit These things are a godsend. I have had so many different brands and models of cycling shoes over the past 15+ years and I never knew shoes could fit this well. I don't have wide feet in the traditional sense, but I do have wide TOES. (I even have a gap between my big toe and little toes, so flip flops are tough for me!). I've just always had cramped toes in any cycling shoes as a result. And worse, "wide shoes" would still be too tight in the toes, but sloppy in the heels. My last shoes were Sidi Megas, but even in a large size (46.5) and in Mega (wide) they never really fit as well as they should. I'd tighten in the heels and crank the instep strap tight to lock the heels, but the toes were always a compromise. Just pulling out my old Sidi insoles and standing on them showed that I had to bend my big toe inward to fit into the pointy shoe (why did I pay so much for those years ago?) Finally after talking to tons of people and reading everything I could find on the subject I came across these as an option. The shoe last is actually shaped like a human foot, and I can say it works. The wider toebox and "non-dress shoe shape" might not be the most fashionable look for some, but it makes a ton of sense. I kick myself for not realizing this before - since my running shoes are Vivo Barefoot, which use the same shape and I love. So these were pretty good out of the box, and I baked them in the oven a couple of times to press out one toe a touch and tighten up the heelcup. A little followup with a hairdryer and I got the heel cup and arch support / instep spot-on custom fit. The heat molding on these is really amazing. I've never had shoes that fit so well. I no longer need to crank the tension to keep my heel stable, and I no longer feel cramped at the toes. In fact, riding feels totally different than it ever has. My feet can have space and be comfortable without feeling loose and disconnected. I could probably ride these things wide open and they would stay right on my feet they fit so well. I'm never buying a cycling shoe that isn't heat mold-able. And the shoe being made out of a giant tub of heat mold-able carbon fiber is way cooler than any shoe I've previously owned. It isn't a flat slab of carbon with a synthetic upper like most shoes. The carbon sole wraps up above the foot and locks you in place. So instead of sliding around on top of the sole or pronating inward when you push down on pedals, you stay solid. It works kind of like a motion-control running shoe cranked up to 11. Also - since it is the same mold-able carbon as the heel, you can use an oven or hairdryer to custom mold it to your exact foot shape. That means with a hairdryer and a bit of free time you can really squeeze or stretch these things to your exact fit. I know each person's experience in fitting a shoe is different, but given how much you can bend and push the carbon around I think these have the potential to solve a ton of fit issues for people. I measured myself from the Bont website's guide, and it was pretty good. I leaned a half size longer to accommodate my superfeet yellow insoles and the fit is true to measurement. And though they offer wide sizes, I didn't need it. (In fact I bent the heel cups in a fair amount in the molding process to get a good snug fit). Dual direction boas work perfectly, the kangaroo leather uppers look pretty good, and these things are CRAZY light weight. Since I'm a 46.5 I had never thought cycling shoes could be light, but these actually are. I can't wait to take these on some longer rides and really break in the leather uppers, but even without doing that they already feel like a second skin. The one area I do notice is that the tongue isn't as padded as my old Sidi shoes. This doesn't strike me as a big issue, since the custom fit gets rid of the need to crank the boas super-tight - but it took me a little bit to get myself out of the habit of over-tightening the instep boa and I could feel the tension through the tongue. But since I don;t need to crank that down to keep my feet snug, I finally learned to just leave it snug but not "cut off the circulation tight" like I used to on the Sidi Genius. Replaceable heels and rubber toe guards are also essential for me in any road shoe, and these both seem pretty substantial. The black toe guards on the white shoes are a nice tough in keeping these looking good. (And amazingly Lake CX 332 don't have replaceable heels, which was the other "wide" shoe I considered - but who wants to wear out an expensive pair of shoes for a non-replaceable $10 heelpad?!) Oh, and they are cheaper than my old Sidi Genius Megas too.
