Description

This road tyre is a perfect choice of upgrade for riders who want world-class, super-fast rolling and cornering on every journey.

Technologies:
Challenge Handmade Clinchers (HCL): Our Handmade Clinchers are made from the same materials and processes as our handmade tubulars but instead of sewing an inner tube inside the casing is wrapped around an aramid bead to form a tire that fits on a clincher rim. The HCL is moulded flat, not in a horseshoe like a TLR or VCL. This shape allows the casing to naturally deform over surface imperfections and minimize rolling resistance. A tubeless tire is moulded in a U-shape to make the sidewalls rigid, so the system does not “burp” or lose air when it deforms after it encounters a surface imperfection. The tubeless tire’s stiff sidewall compromises its ability to equal a supple HCL with a latex inner tube.

Challenge Criterium Open Tubular Road Tyre is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Chasm from Really good, if expensive, tyres I've got about 1000 miles on these now. As a previous reviwer has mentioned, they were a beast to fit first time, I shredded two latex tubes trying to get them on. But once broken in they come off and go on easily enough. I can't comment on the accuracy of the claimed weight, because I haven't bothered weighing them. However, in all other respects they live up to the manufacturer's claims. Despite running them at around 110 psi the ride is noticeably more supple than on other clinchers I have used. Perhaps as a result of this, they feel extremely grippy and confidence-inspiring in the turns. No punctures so far. That may be just dumb luck, but it may also be a by-product of the very high thread count. Pricy, but easily my favourite clincher tyre so far.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Dewdrop23 from Looks Cool I thought I’d take time to summarise my early experiences with these tyres having done a few hundred miles on them. The first thing to point out with open tubulars is how difficult there are to fit for the first time, this appears to be common to all OT’s not just this version. When I say difficult, I mean almost impossible! But after a few hours trying and many Google searches this is what I can recommend: • The Challenge website there is a fitment guide that gives you a few pointers • On-line searches suggested using either talc or grease on the beads in order to help roll them on to the rim as the cotton carcass doesn't roll as a rubber one would. (if you use grease, remember to use a de-grease to remove excess that gets on the brake track..!!) • Use old/repaired tubes for first fitment..!!! Definitely not your best super-light/latex ones. This is actually recommended on the Challenge website and it’s the best piece of advice I found because getting the tube in place past the flat tyre is so difficult the risk of pinch flats is very high. Once you have actually got them on, do a few miles on them (30/40). After this the tyre will start to take the correct shape, and the tyre and tubes are really easy to remove and refit. At this point you can swap your old tubes for super-light/latex ones. It terms of performance these tyres in combination with the Challenge latex tubes feel super quick and comfortable. The improved rolling resistance is markedly noticeable on downhill sections where they pick up speed much quicker. The natural cotton sidewalls look really cool. Other comments I read have said they get dirty quickly but a bit of Fairy washing up liquid got them looking like new in no time. My biggest disappointment was the weight. I measured each tyre at 250g compared to the product description saying 215g. +/- 10 or 15g for the handmade process would be understandable, but 35g is not. I almost sent them back for this reason alone. As a result I have actually added weight to my bike rather than save weight even with the latex tubes. If I’d known this I’d have chosen the much cheaper Elite version at half the price of these. For performance and looks I’d give 5 stars. But weight, only 3. If they had come out at 215g each I would have said the full 5 stars.

Q & A

Removable valve core

Do these tubs have a removable valve core?
Asked by: AndrewPease
The tyres you have listed are clinchers and do not have a valve. You can use them with any 700c compatible tubes which should have cores that are removable.
