Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful and light. Bought this expander bung to match my Deda cockpit, Newton stem and 215 bars. The anodized red color screams of pro level performance with a very light 34 grams on my scale and the length just right providing enough support below the stem area. Though the looks and build quality is top class, I find the aluminum expander tough to stretch out using a short 6 mm hex key even after I tried applying grease to the top and bottom cones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best A great quality expander bung which is easy to fit, and remove should you need to. The load is spread over a large area in the steerer which is perfect for a carbon steerer. Bought it for a new build to replace the cheap bung which came with my new frameset. Recommended.

Q & A

what internal diameter will it fit?

My existing bung is too wide for my new Tusk Lite full carbon forks (internal diameter 22mm) - will the Deda expander bung fit?

Just about - but you might have to do the same as I did and use an old wire tie or something to hold the parts together but with the top wedge totally unthreaded from the bottom wedge. Drop the whole (dis-)assembly into the steerer, thread the top wedge into the bottom and pull the wire out once it's all nice and tight. A bit of a faff but once it's in it works great!

Has the bung got a hollow centre

I need an expander bung with a hollow centre so I can fit a hollow bolt to route the front brake cable through it as is the design of my Fuji D6. Is the centre of the expander hollow?

I apologise but the middle of the this expander bung is solid and does not have any channels to route any cables. I hope this helps.

Yes. I'd advise having at least a 5 mm spacer so that the top cap fits snugly

can i use these with an alloy steerer

if not what should i use dont really want to use a star fangled nut as i havent the tools to install sfn

What size steerer does this fit?

Will this fit a one-inch carbon steerer?

It will be too bog for a 1" steerer - it's tight on a 1 1/8", unless it's very thin walled.

Bolt Length For Top Cap

This expander does not come with a top cap or top cap bolt. What length bolt is required with the top cap to pre load the headset. Looking at the pictures of the expander the top cap bolt needs to be long enough to reach into the expander to catch the threads.

When you insert this into steerer shaft you tighten first with an 8 mm hex wrench. The top cap then can be bolted in place later without affecting the expander grip. Helpfully this instruction is not included with the product.

6 mm metric will do the job, Any length over about 40 mm will do. The actual length limiter is the steerer tube.
