Magazine Reviews

Review from Cycling Active

This is one of those bone chilling rides where the sweat threatens to freeze on your brow. These gloves have some nice touches, such as the cleverly designed articulated knuckles, and the low profile Velcro on the cuff. Not only are the Extreme Winters very warm, they're also waterproof, making them ideal in even the very worst conditions. Though very comfy inside, they feel a little clammy in all but the coldest weather, and their bulk isn't ideal for fishing change out of a pocket for a mid-ride cuppa.

In conclusion...

Cycling Active Best on a Budget. Great value, well-made and very warm, but not perfect.

Rating: 8/10

Review from road.cc

dhb's Extreme Winter Gloves are designed, as the name implies, to protect your hands in cold and wet weather. And they do just that.

I've used them on the bike when the temperature's been hovering between zero and five degrees and they've kept my hands very warm indeed, right down to the finger tips. I also gave the gloves the rigorous road.cc hosepipe test, and can confirm that the waterproof membrane keeps out the water.

Comfort is good. The gloves have an 'anatomic cut', like some other cycling garments, meaning the fingers are curved, to better fit your hands when holding the bars. This means less rucking of the fabric, so less chafing. In addition, the inside of the glove has a very soft lining, and the palm is padded for a bit of extra comfort. There are also strips of silicon across the palm meaning grip is good even in the wettest conditions.

A Velcro tab ensures the gloves is close fitting round the wrist and you don't get a draught , but the cuff isn't especially long, so you'd need to make sure your jersey or top has decent length sleeves, so as not to get a cold gap.

These gloves normally retail for a penny under £30, currently reduced to around £26 on the Wiggle website (dhb is Wiggle's inhouse brand). There are similar gloves at similar prices, but you can also pay double or triple that for winter gloves from the premium brands, so this price represents fair value.

In conclusion...

Verdict
Gloves that keep your hands warm and dry in bad weather - ideal for winter riding.

Rating: 4/5

good value for money warm gloves in cold weather. Good value - used every day last winter and, whilst not the coldest of winters, these gloves kept my hands very warm throughout. 05 September 2016
Toasty warm I get exceptionally cold hands (poor circulation) and these were very good in all but the coldest days last winter, when I wore them with undergloves. Only down side is that after not that many wears the inner lining has ripped and I needed to restitch it. 15 August 2016
Actually keep hands warm A bit like wearing ski gloves but you get used to them. These do actually allow you to ride in winter without being too uncomfortable. I certainly feel that they are better than my fellow riders' 10 June 2016
Decent, but not for the cold types Got these for the missus who gets cold hands easily. She liked em and they fit well but they where still not warm enough in the Scottish winter. She used them for commuting every day so got a good idea about them. She is however some one who gets cold easily so for a more warm blooded person these would be great. 05 June 2016

Answer:
I don't think there is any specific way to find what gloves fit who as hands vary so much on each individual.

I have large hands and I would usually go for the Extra Large size glove BUT I thought carefully about it and knew that I needed and glove to fit quite snug so i could still feel in control of my hands if that makes sense.

I went for the Large size and at first it was a tight fit, when the gloves loosened up a bit, they now fit perfectly and I was glad I chose the large instead of extra large. Hope this helps :)

Q:

Are they easy to take on and off?

Do these gloves have one of those separate liners inside like SealSkinz? . . . I'm hoping they don't?

Also how easy is it to tuck your Jersey/Jacket sleeves into the gloves cuffs? . . . do they open-up/expand enough to allow fitting your sleeve underneath?

thanks in advance

Answer:
Really easy. The lining seems to be attached. A real bonus.

They're a gauntlet style with a velcro tab. I've had no trouble getting sleeves inside, but I guess it depends how thick your clothes are! Thin/tight stuff shouldn't be a problem at all.

They are very good gloves.

Answer:
They are pretty easy to take on and off. No separate liners inside, just a snug, warm inside lining. The cuffs can close fairly tight around the wrist with the simple, adjustable velcro strap and depending on your jersey or jacket sleeves can tuck into the gloves or vice versa.

Easy to put on and take off. They don't have a separate lining like the sealskinz they actually stay in one piece. They slip over the ends of my jersey sleeves easily, not too tight.

Answer:
They don't have a seperate lining. They are quite easy to get on & off, like others I ordered a pair on the big side. The only time I had a bit of trouble getting them on was when my hands were a bit sweaty and I was trying to put them back on.

The cuffs expand quite easily and you can fit your jersey sleeves under. It's a bit more tricky once you've got one glove on but still do-able.

Hope this helps.

Answer:
They have lining inside but it's not separate. I'm not sure what SealSkinz are but the lining feels lie part of the glove and doesn't come off.

The gloves are relatively easy to take on and off although mine are quite tight so I often use my mouth to pull them off by the fingers. Easy to put on though, no faffing around like with some other gloves.

The glove cuffs fit a sleeve, although I don't usually tuck mine in.

Answer:
Nope - the inner is stitched in, so it doesn't ride up. The cuffs are spacey, so tucking sleeves in is no problem.

The only issue is sizing: go for a larger size than you usually use.

On a gentle cool wash, these gloves should be suitable for washing. Generally we would recommend no greater than 30 degrees with a non-bio detergent and no fabric softener. If you avoid excessive spinning and dry flat thoroughly, then these should be fine.

Just check one of the other gloves online to see the sizing chart. They're generic sizes so they should apply to these gloves too.

The size guide says:
