Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hardware is OK but software make it useless I have tried this on a couple of short tours from Wilts to North Wales and from Wilts to Cornwall. A good NiMH battery for high discharge applications lasts all day. Sadly the software make it unusable for for navigating all but the shortest simplest route. The route planner heavily favours off road routes. So it will plan a route all around the houses just to stay off a road for a hundred meters or so. There is no option for changing the route planning to favour roads which is no use if you have a road bike. I have tried planning routes using online tools and saving to the Garmin in GPX format. But this still does not work as it will not accept more than 50 waypoints. Cutting down to 50 waypoints on a long route means they are too far apart and the Garmin starts adding in random detours. The computer software for route planning and installing Garmin updates only runs on a Windows PC. There is also a smart phone app but this cannot be used to plan routes, download Garmin updates or export routes planned online. Since you usually don't want to lug a laptop around on tour this is again poorly thought out. On tour, exporting a route from a smartphone app via Bluetooth would be by far the most convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality device with many features I purchased the eTrek Touch mainly for hiking and chose this spec because of the altimeter and touch screen. A number of the profiles are not relevant to my needs, such as Geocaching, but the profiles can be changed and adapted to whichever activity you use. There are many features within the GPS, which are not immediately apparent. The user manual is poor and doesn't really tell you how to use it. Eventually, I found how to display location coordinates on the map screen. The quality of the product is good and I find that the underlying maps are of sufficient detail for my needs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is a great GPS which is easy to use. I bought the etrex 35 to replace my ageing vista. I use it for geocaching and a navigation aid and I am pleased with how simple and intuitive it is. I am a little disappointed that the interface with the computer is not as straightforward as it could be, there is work by garmin to be done to make dragging and dropping from your browser onto the device easier, but it is still possible to do this. Battery life seems to be ok, as does the ability to quickly acquire a GPS fix and maintain it. I may well investigate putting OS mapping onto the device in the future using an SD card, as overall I'm quite pleased with this device.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor for geocaching Not the unit I'd hoped for. The 'preloaded with thousands of geocaches' thing seems to be untrue, as you are linked to Garmin's website, which is no longer supported. It absolutely eats batteries; 16 hour battery life? Less than 6 hours on a couple of Duracells. I have to carry and use spare batteries every outing. It seems to think it's loaded with sample OS mapping which will apparently expire in May 1016; we'll see about that one. It crashes and freezes with alarming regularity One menu is obtained by briefly pressing the 'power off' button. This is the 21st century, who does that? I'll be buying something more expensive by another manufacturer.

Q & A

I assume the battery is rechargeable via USB?

The battery is NOT rechargeable. The batteries are 2 x AA. The unit does NOT have any means of charging them. You can use any type of AA battery, but it is advisable to use rechargeable NiMh ones, but note that they have to be removed and charged in a separate charger. That is actually quite a good feature because if your batteries die on you when out, simply buy a fresh pair (any type of AA) and pop them in and the unit will pick up where it left off. Built in batteries eventually loose capacity and when they die on you when out, you;ll have to find a power source and wait hours for it to to recharge. The Garmin built in batteries used on other types (like the Edge series) are not user replaceable and must be returned to Garmin for replacement (not cheap).

Which of the european countries has a topographic map? (Does Turkey have a topographic map?) The customs wage limit in my country is 70 euro. Show you the declaration price under 70 euros? Which european countries are included?

How well does the screen work in the rain?

How well does the screen work in the rain? Do the rain drops press buttons/select options/click things on the screen or cause it to move about unpredictably? Is there an easy screen lock?

The device is fully ruggedised, IPX7 water-rated and has a scratch-resistant screen, and won't be affected by rain drops. You can lock the screen to prevent inadvertent screen touches.

Mapping

Please could you tell me if the eTrex 35 comes with Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K OS mapping bundle aswell as the TopoActive Europe bundle. Thank you.
