Review from 220 Triathlon

Garmin’s first underwater heart-rate monitors transfer data to a connected device after your swim Garmin have just launched the HRM Tri and HRM Swim, their first heart-rate monitors designed for use underwater. Starting with the HRM Tri, it’s the company’s smallest and lightest heart-rate monitor and sports a slimmer, black band as opposed to the HRM Swim's slightly bulkier blue belt, which kind of resembles a boxing/WWE title belt. Both models store HRM data when swimming then transfer it to a connected compatible device after the swim. They can also send real-time heart rate and interval summaries when the monitor and compatible watch are out of the water. Featuring an adjustable strap, 20 hours of data storage and a rather impressive 10-month battery life, users will be able to analyse their heartbeat in depth through Garmin Connect or their smartphone. As always, Garmin Connect will enable users to plan, save and share their workouts online – perfect for those of you that like to show off. The HRM Swim is the thicker blue belt, which has been purpose-built for the pool, rather than the Tri which is more accustomed to open water. Why you ask? Well the HRM is denser which will stop the band from sliding down when athletes push of the pool walls.

Customer Reviews

Garmin HRM-Swim Heart Rate Monitor is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Trimack from No longer use it. Liked the idea of it and it is better for HR accuracy as opposed to the wrist based sensor. However could not get the tension correct, it was either too tight and would dig into me or to have it slightly looser and it would sometimes moved down when pushing off the wall when completing Butterfly. In the end I got fed up with it and stopped using it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by lizz63 from Doesn't give me usuable HR information I have the HRM tri which is very good under a bra or wetsuit, but falls down in the pool especially with tumble turns. I bought this one for pool swimming. It stays up if you do it up really tight, but it is a bit uncomfortable and the hooks are in a fiddly place. My main issue though is that although it connects with my Garmin 935 (and I make sure they are connected before I start swimming), the data that is provided to MyGarmin is just the time in zones, not a continuous HR for the whole swim. This is not the same as the HRM tri which gives you the red HR data over time for the swim. Its really annoying to the extent that I think twice about using it for pool training sessions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by gje23 from Does what it says on the tin! This hr monitor does exactely what it says it will, heart rate seems fairly accurate verses perceived effort. Pairs up seemlessly with my 735xt and is quick to send data once my swim is finished. The extender is a nice touch and it would truely fit anyone. The only reason I have given it 4/5 stars is that it is not particularly comfortable - its quite rigid but I think thats probably not fixable given the job it has to do. Never had any problems with it slipping and yet to attempt to change the batteries

Rated 4 out of 5 by EddKnights from Works well, slightly uncomfortable The strap connects relatively easily with my Garmin watch (Fenix 5) and worked on first use. It doesn't provide live HR data, but uploads when out of the water and allows you to view HR over time in the app afterwards. Pro: Acurate HR data when underwater, is awesome for training, and understanding HR zones hit during pool training. Cons: Tight rubbery strap is rather uncomfortable.

Can it be used in the sea?

I'm an open water swimmer and never swim in the pool. I'd like to know whether I could use this in a pool.
Asked by: bertiebirdman
I can advise that the manufacturer specify it can be used in both the pool and open water swimming. I hope this helps.
