Complex installationI had problems with the installation. The inner part turned to the driver. Re-installing only helped. In the end, everything works.

Prefer it to a star nutI used this when fitting a new fork as all the cheap star nut fitting tools were out of stock everywhere!
But I have to say it works very well and was even strong enough to use it to press home my crown race on the fork. Not that I'd recommend doing that with it, but as I had no press tool to fit the crown race on the steerer tube it did the job quite nicely!

Usual Hope High QualityAs usual this is made to the exacting standards of Hope. The Head Doctor oozes quality & does away with your Starfangled thing. Works on compression & a rubber O Ring which expands as the centre nut is tightened. Available in loads of colours. What's not to like?

Impossible to install - very misleading, avoidAs my postie will testify, I have bought many products form Wiggle; but this has been a rare bad experience. As a reasonably competent home mechanic I found the installation impossible without risking serious damage to the bike.
The Hope installation video shows the unit dropping into the steerer tube - do not be misled, this will probably not be the case. Even loosening the unit to its utmost, it is probably still about 0.75mm over-width (on a Canyon carbon tube). Searching the web this is common experience and it looks like only a combination of brute force with a hammer and chamfering the steerer tube will get it in. I am not prepared to do that and recommend others to think carefully before purchasing.
Of course after multiple fails to install, grease etc, the product is now used and impossible to return so has to go in the 'lost causes' parts bin the workshop!
Does this fit 1"1/8 or 1" steerer tubes? Carbon or alloy or both?
Reviews about problems fitting to 3T Funda forks. Is the expander too big to go into the steerer in these cases?
Asked by: kssl
1 1/8" alloy steerers. Carbon steerers have a thicker wall and so have a smaller internal diameter. You need to order a Carbon specific bung which is smaller and won't damage the inside of the steerer tube.

If I already have a star-fangled nut fitted, can I still use a Head Doctor?
Asked by: castle
It depends on how deep the star nut is set, if it is shallow then there will not be enough for the Hed Doctor to fit but if it is deeper down you may be able to use it. Worst case scenario you just pound the star nut deeper into your head tube so it fits

fitting inside tube
do you have to use a srewdriver down the middle of this and tap it home, as it says it fits all tubes but its seems really tight to me, I've loosed it off as much as possible but its still not fitting in easily
Asked by: golffinder
We would not advise using a screwdriver to fit this product.

1" Threadless Headset
I realise that this is made for 1" 1/8 steerers but the Hope tech website says that the maximum expansion is 26.6mm so I presume it will fit smaller? I'm interested in a tifosi carbon fork and would it be possible for you to check? Many thanks.
Asked by: barfuss
I can confirm that this is designed for a steerer tube of 1 1/8th as the inner diameter of the steerer is 26.6. I can confirm that this is not compatible with a 1" steerer tube. I hope this helps.

Will the Head Doctor fit a tapered fork?
Hi,
I'm interested in fitting this to a Rockshox XC32 fork with a tapered steered. Will this work and if not are there are any other options rather than the star fangled nut for a tapered fork?
Cheers
Asked by: pedrosC
Even on this tapered for model, the Rockshox XC32 should feature a 1 1/8th inch steerer at its top and as such, the Head Doctor should be suitable.

Hi I just ordered one of these and I think it mite be the wrong one as I have a full carbon steer should I have got the pro headset expander?
Asked by: MarkDyer
I've got one fitted in a carbon steerer and trust me it wasn't easy to do. I ended up removing the rubber ring and "modifying the aluminium some what. Fit's like a glove now, one that will never come off!!
Hope stuff is usually top quality but why this has to be made so tight is beyond me?
