Customer Reviews

Ortlieb Ortlieb Front Roller Classic Panniers 2014 4.9 5 82 82
Strong and reliable These are two very sturdy and reliable panniers. I use one every day and occasionally use both when I do grocery shopping. In one, I can fit my macbook as well as a jacket, lunch, change of clothes if necessary, handbag and a spare lock. The clips fit securely onto my carrier, and I used some of the included attachments to ensure a tight fit. There is a hook near the bottom which keeps the pannier from bouncing around. Also features a reflector panel to help with visibility. Great product, the benchmark in bicycle panniers. 13 July 2010
Rolling with front rollers I'm very happy with my Front Rollers. If they were larger, I wouldn't mind a few more organizing options, but for this size, I think the inner pocket and inner zip pocket are fine, just to keep a few things from getting squished to the bottom of your bag. I would like at least a single pocket on the outside though, which wouldn't even have to be waterproof. So far all my rides with the Front Rollers have been fairly local, so I didn't have my rear panniers, and it would have been really handy to have at least one pocket to stick an energy bar wrapper in, or a drink. I haven't ridden in the rain with these yet, but just looking at the construction and from having watched my friend that recommended these, I am confident they are fully water proof. The classic clips for attaching these work fine, but for my rack, being able to turn the prong the opposite direction would be preferable. The upper clips work great though, and appear to be very sturdy. I'm looking forward to my next big trip with the flexibility of four panniers! 30 June 2010
I used these front panniers on the back to do JOGLE and these were perfect. You pay for what you get. Very good German product. Have used these in the pouring rain and contents were bone dry. 21 June 2010
Top Quality You simply can't go wrong with Ortlieb panniers - they're the best available. A simple opening and closing mechanism and tough material mean that they hold their shape well. You can also carry them by their shoulder straps. They come with brackets that allow you to fit them to a variety of thickness racks in any manner that suits your own bike/rack combo. If I had one improvement it'd be a way to join them together when carrying off-bike. 13 June 2010

Answer:
No, the material is different as well.

Classic: PVC material, QL-1 locking system.
Plus: modern woven synthetic with waterproof lining, QL-2 locking system.

QL-2 locking system requires no tools to adjust and works with the anti-theft cables. QL-1 requires an allen key to adjust.

The difference in material is under hot debate - the Plus is environmentally friendly, Ortlieb claim it to be as good as the Classic, but some say the Classic PVC wears better.

My local bike shop helped me solve this problem recently. My bike didn't have mounts for a rack, and I bet your roadbike does not either. We went with the Civia Loft Pannier rack, and it works great!

These panniers are rear rack compatible but you will need a rack with a central post running up from the rack mount, otherwise the bags will need to be mounted at a angle.

Answer:
The rear ones are bigger and can have accessories such as a drink bottle holder and a helmet holder.

Unless you are camping and need the extra space then I would save the money and buy the front ones. I am doing the LEJOG staying at YHAs and B&Bs and have more than enough space for all my stuff (all my stuff is small and lightweight). Replace stuff like full sized towels with a Lifeventure Microfibre Travel Towel.

I put the stuff I need regularly in my Ortlieb Bar Bag.

Hope this helps.

Answer:
I use only one of the panniers about 90% of the time (I only use both of them when doing a weekly grocery shop so typically just use one when commuting or running shorter errands).

The only time I ever have an issue with using just one pannier is getting on or off the bike. Heavily loaded it does take a time or two of practice to counterbalance the weight (I also have a men's bike with a crossbar so have to swing my leg around back. It's also a tall bike so I have to tip it over a bit to do so). Once on the bike, I honestly don't ever notice an imbalance in weight using just one pannier. I thought I would - but pleasantly surprised I don't and would say you'd be very comfortable using just one regularly!

Answer:
They do not come with a front rack, but will fit almost all front racks on the market. I use a Jandd front rack because I like the top shelf, but there are many others that do fine. Tubus is also a great rack, Surly makes a fine rack. Front racks can be found at Wiggle along with the panniers, but they are sold separately.

I can confirm that they do not come with a front pannier rack, this needs to be purchased separately. I would suggest the LifeLine Alloy Front Rack as it is a good price and keeps the front panniers out of the way for steering. I hope this helps.
