The Bortola clincher wheelset, with it's low profile 21mm ultra-light tubeless ready rim, is the light and powerful cousin of the Bracciano and offers you straight-pull rigidity and strength making it ideal for training on harsh roads or racing.

Description

The Bortola uses Japanese EZO bearings to give you the smoothest of rides, with low rolling resistance. Using Pro Lite's patented spoke braces which effectively increase the size of the flange for better power transfer, meaning when you pedal the force created isn’t lost in the wheel and propels you forwards. They have used straight pull spokes to really keep the power transfer at a maximum

Bortola Hubs The Bortola hubs are a direct descendant of the acclaimed Bracciano hubs. Light, fast, small, dependable and easy to work on.

Campagnolo Bortola Hub

Japanese EZO bearings keep the rolling resistance to a minimum and the straight-pull spokes keep the power transfer at the maximum.

Alloy Rim The flash-welded, low profile alloy rim of the Bortola A21W offers the perfect mix of low weight and strength. High strength-to-weight ratio 6061 alloy keeps the rim light and rotational mass low, for a snappy, featherweight feeling.

Campagnolo Bortola Rim

Tubeless Ready The Bortola's sleeved, tubeless-ready rims are perfectly suited to trying out a tubeless road setup. Please note the wheels do not come with sealant, tape or valves that are all required to run a tubeless tyre.

Customer Reviews

Pro Lite Bortola A21W Alloy Clincher Wheelset is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 2 out of 5 by JHN2020 from They really are Bortola 2.0 and weight 1,625 kg I put them on the scale as soon as they arrived and noticed that they are a lot heavier than 1425 grams. Then I noticed that it says Bortola 2.0 in the rim. With those the weight matches. (730g front, 895 rear) http://www.pro-lite.net/road-wheels/bortola-a21w-2 I did not mind the weigth and thought that they might be more durable than first generation Bortolas. Only after I installed Schwalbe Pro Ones tubeless on and put them on my bike I noticed that rear wheel is 2-3mm off center. Runs true tho. Previous Shimano RS100s run directly in the middle of the frame and this one is on drive side so much I needed to adjust my brake caliber and you can clearly see it. Would send them back but I already messed with tyre sealant.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Brick724 from The wheels are poor quality! Originally purchased these in sept. 2016 and put about 1300 miles on them with no problems. Then I had my first spoke break. I found a replacement and had it repaired. Then a month later had more spokes break in the rear wheel. I contacted Pro Lite and after approximately 8 emails they sent me a rebuild kit and paid to have the rear rebuilt. Rode for 4 more months and the spokes started giving me problems. I continually have had to check the spoke tension on a regular basis. Now I’m noticing hair line cracks around the spoke nipples in the rim surface. These wheels are just not sturdy enough for me and even I’m well within Pro Lites weight parameters (198 lbs) they just don’t hold up. The ride is great and they’re light but just not built to last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by riftzoner from Fantastic quality hand built wheels for under £300 This is the 2nd set of Pro-Lite wheels I own, my first were the Bracciano's which I love. So seeing the Bortolo's at a bargain £275 on Wiggle made the decision to purchase my second set of Pro-Lite's seriously easy! For a start they are hand made, yes hand made! They use super high quality Japanese bearings & the attention to detail is fantastic. Honestly I'd happily mount them in my lounge as a work of art! But what would be the point in that? Well, because all that high level engineering & quality craftsmanship would be wasted! Really, They are intended to be appreciated & ridden on the road. They are super light at a quoted 1400 grams per set. Please be aware of their weight tolerances, yes they're strong but if you're a big strong rider over 80kgs you maybe better off looking elsewhere. I'm 170cms tall weighing in at 70kgs so I'd say they are pretty perfect for me & my size. Ive read several reviews that have given negative comments about the long term reliability of Pro-Lites lightweight wheels but within every review there has been a clue as to why & that was due to rider weight. Durin My personal experience over thousands of miles riding I have never experienced a single issue. What I like about these wheels (apart from their weight) is the quality of the engineering & shear beauty of them. The hubs are so well machined, the profiles so well thought out. Honestly, I could stare at them for ages. The Sandvik bladed spokes are super high quality & the tubeless ready rims have a fantastic bead designed to make the tyres fit really snugly. They also come ready taped for tubeless. The rear hub engagement feels instantaneous & is near silent when freewheeling. The wheels come complete with skewers & a 10 speed conversion spacer so you can run 10 or 11speed straight out of the box. Both wheels run super true & they have really nice braking surfaces. Add a nice long warranty into the mix along with Wiggles best in the business customer service back up & you can't go wrong! Oh, did I say these wheels are fast? Hot dickerty they're quick! They corner supremely & just track really well. The current trend towards slightly wider rims is well catered for here though I'm running mine on 700 x 23 this gives them a slightly more rounded profile which I've found I really like, this equals better grip & cornering. If you're looking for a wheel upgrade for your bike this summer at a killer price, here it is, just make sure you fit within the recommended weight tolerances & they'll last for years. Fit them & discover how light your bike has become, it's a miracle of weight loss!

Rated 4 out of 5 by AV46 from Good all-around, but rear wheel can be flexy Overall, I like these wheels. They're light, fast, and handle predictably. I have about 1100 miles/1770 km on this set so far this year. My only real complaint is I find the rear wheel a bit too flexible during out-of-the-saddle climbs at slow speeds. I often encounter brake rub. If I know I'm approaching a climb that I have to power thru, I will open the adjustment lever fully so that the pads are as far apart as possible. And I'll often still experience brake rub. This can also be true with starts from a dead stop. As speed picks up, the rub diminishes. With my previous wheels (Bontrager Race X Lites) I didn't have this problem. Could it be that the spokes need to be tightened up? Certainly possible. I'm also not the lightest of riders either at 180 lbs/82 kg, so that could also be a part of it. I won't blame the wheels entirely, but bear this in mind if you are of similar size. To keep the weight low, there are compromises that need to be taken. BUT, having said that, I think that these are a great set for a first upgrade. Not sure I would race on them, but for fitness/casual, the good definitely outweigh the bad.

Q & A

88kg, Bortola or Fulcrum R3

Hi there, I weigh 88kg and I am between the Pro-Lite Bortola and the Fulcrum Racing 3. I really like the Pro-Lites but given I am not the lightest rider the Fulcrums with the slightly deeper profile might be a better choice? Anyone has got an opinion on that? Thanks Lars
Asked by: Saldegracia
The Pro lite wheels would be a good choice for you.

Tyre type

Is the a specific type of tyre to be used with this wheel? Also I have read the width can mean having to have wider brakes. I'm currently running mavic Kysrim equipes so I'm concerned il have made an incorrect selection.
Asked by: Simplest
We would recommend using a 25mm tyre width with this wheelset. The wider rim should not create any compatibility issues with your bike.

Pro Lite Bortola Rim Tape

Hello, Bought these wheels recently and they were fitted with tyres as part of a bike service. A few days a go I decided to put in lighter tubes and found removal of the tyres to be very difficult (I'm no novice!). On a second daylight look, it appears as if the rim tape is too narrow and doesn't cover the entire rim base. This then causes the tyre to catch between the upturned edge of the tape as it extends out of the hollow centre section. The effect is as if the tyre is stuck to the inside of the rim breaking surface. These are my first "wide" rim wheels so can you please let me know the width of the installed rim tape? Regards Steve
Asked by: Anonymous
I have had terrible problems with the supplied rim tape too. You are right it isn't wide enough and leaves some internal holes exposed, it also gets displaced easily when fitting the tyre which has resulted in bits that stick up rather than lay flat. To cap it all I kept getting punctures on long rides, I thought I was just having a spate of bad luck. After 4 punctures on five 5 rides and finding the tubes punctured on the inside I realised that they were always in the same place. The join in the rim tape while not sharp was certainly very poorly finished and rough and was causing the punctures by wearing the inside of the inner tube which then gave up suddenly once they got warm through braking on long descents. Scary when it happends on the front and at speed. The first one trashed the brand new Michelin Latex Tube I had fitted, the hole is way too big to patch....not pleased and not what I expected from a £300 wheelset. My advice if you buy these wheels is to throw the supplied rim tape away and get something decent to replace it. I've used 19mm Velox successfully.

Hub ratchets

Do these have "look at me I've got expensive wheels" loud hub ratchets or would I be able to freewheel and hear myself think?
Asked by: Wormscoffer
There should be noticeable hub buzz

Hi, I am 118kg and trying to find a new pair of faster wheels... will these wheels be okay for my weight (I am trying to lose!)

What rider weight will these wheels take?

Asked by: Sarah48
Pro-Lite do not list a weight limit with these wheels, though I would not advise going much over 110 KG's for these.

What is the rim weight?

Any idea how much the rims weigh, as it is difficult to compare wheels without knowing how much the rims actually weigh. Your Cosine 32 mm Alloy wheels have rims which weigh 465g wondering if these have the same weight rims or are lighter.
Asked by: Ysarn
873 grams rear wheel 17,5-622 ETRTO. Front has 679 grams. Total 1552 grams.

Will these wheels be an upgrade compared to mavic aksiums, I know they're lighter but are they stiffer, roll better etc?
