The new racing tyre is called Schwalbe One. The name alone indicates how significant this new tire is for the bicycle tyre manufacturer based in the German town of Reichshof. It is produced by Schwalbe in a high-end factory set up exclusively for the manufacture of this new top-class tyre. The Schwalbe One has been used RadioShack Leopard Trek, AG2R and FDJ.
With its Schwalbe One the company is underlining its major objectives in cycle racing. The Schwalbe One is the fastest and at the same time the most reliable competition tire we have ever produced.
The new triple compound: Minimum rolling resistance, maximum cut resistance
A completely new compound, the OneStar triple compound, was developed specifically for extremely low rolling resistance. With Advances in recent years there have been major developments in compounding, without which such rubber mixes would not have been possible. As a result Schwalbe has achieved a great improvement in the familiar trade-off between rolling resistance, wet adhesion and durability. The technicians have subjected innumerable rubber mixes and more than 50 prototypes to laboratory tests and practical trials.
However, the OneStar triple compound is not only faster, it also delivers the good grip we all appreciate and it is also more cut-resistant than previous compounds. This makes the tire significantly more puncture-resistant. The tread contour with its more robust tyre shoulder also helps to make the tyre more reliable.
With its 205 grams the new racing tire, due to a slight increase in the amount of material used, is just a little heavier than the Ultremo ZX. But the technical benefits more than offset this supposed disadvantage: thanks to the innovative triple compound, rolling resistance is minimized. At the same time the compound and the new tread pattern make the tyre extremely puncture-resistant.
Jens Voigt from Team RadioShack Leopard Trek confirms this fact: "I am very satisfied with the performance of the Schwalbe tyres. I never experienced such wet adhesion, such great cornering with traditional, hand-sewn tubed tires in the past. And I'm thrilled with Schwalbe's persistence and the way the company is putting its heart and soul into constantly improving these racing tyres!"
Tubeless Technology
There are hardly any tubeless tyres for racing bikes. In practice, however, this system offers outstanding benefits. The rolling resistance is noticeably lower than with conventional folding and tubular tyres because this system minimizes friction losses. At the same time tubeless systems are extremely safe and a sudden loss of air is almost impossible. There are no longer any tubes that can overheat and burst. A puncture protection liquid seals punctures within tenths of a second.
The most important advantages of the TUBELESS:
Advantage 1: Schwalbe ONE Tubeless is our fastest!
Normally there are two components. Tube and tire are constantly deformed. These flexing movements result in a loss of energy and increase the rolling resistance. If the tube is dispensed with, these negative factors are considerably reduced.
Result: Due to its design principle, the Schwalbe ONE Tubeless is significantly faster! In a direct comparison, the rolling resistance of tubeless tyres is, in fact, less than that of the ultralight Ultremo ZLX.
Advantage 2: Goodbye blowouts
Tubeless tyres offer more safety: In case of a puncture, the air does not escape suddenly, but slowly. The crash risk is also distinctly minimized. And no more tubes mean no more tube blowouts. A vital increase in safety for extremely dangerous tube blowouts (e.g., through overheating on long, steep descents, or valves shearing off) are excluded as well.
Advantage 3: Puncture risk virtually zero – with liquid sealant
The Schwalbe ONE Tubeless is seated firmly and tightly. However, we recommend also using our liquid latex sealant DocBlue Professional. For this active puncture protection system functions just as well in racing bike tyres as it does in the case of mountain bikes. Virtually all defects are immediately sealed again. Only really serious damage (such as cuts) can still delay the ride.
And what about the weight? The tubeless tire weighs more than a folding tyre (tubeless, 305 g / folding tire, 205 g). But there is no tube. If the weight of a standard tube is deducted, the weight of the tubeless is, in principle, identical.
Advantage 4: Less pressure. More performance.
The TUBELESS tyre reaches its peak performance with less pressure (1 bar less than normal folding tyres). This means improved rolling behaviour, better cornering grip and very good traction. And the rolling resistance remains just as excellent as that of the lightweight Ultremo ZLX.
The Schwalbe One factory
Schwalbe has set up a dedicated high-end factory within its production plant in Indonesia, specifically for the manufacture of these tyres. Which is a completely new unit where only Schwalbe One tyres are being produced, with fixed vulcanization and production units that are used exclusively for this tyre and where the most skilled workers in the entire Schwalbe plant can be found helping to ensure a consistently high quality and reliability.
