Description

The spikes work best on ice when running at minimum pressure, while at maximum pressure the tyres can be ridden on ice-free roads with minimal road noise.

Spikes F&Q's
Can it also be ridden on a normal road?
Without any problem, but if the road is only rarely covered with snow the resulting tyre noise may prove annoying.

And it won't slide out in cornering?
No. The spikes 'claw' really well into normal asphalt roads and even fast cornering is not a problem.

Aren't spikes illegal?
Bike tyre spikes are no problem. Only motor vehicles spikes are prohibited in some countries, because they damage the road. Fast E-bikes are however considered motor vehicles.

Do the tyres have to be run in?
In order to ensure that spikes are permanently fixed, tyres should be run in for about 25 miles on asphalt, while avoiding any fast acceleration or heavy braking.

What is the lifespan of the spikes?
All Schwalbe spikes have a core made of extremely hard wearing tungsten carbide, so they can cover a few thousand miles. It is normal for the spike edges to round off and for them to become more deeply embedded.

Customer Reviews

Schwalbe Winter Kevlar Guard Rigid Spiked Road Tyre is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by EasternJay from Good for ice. Not too much noise. I have used the 26 inch version on my old hybrid bike for last couple of years after sliding off on ice on my all season touring tyres. Purchase of a new bike meant bigger tyres required although will now wait for next years winter season. I use these on my regular commute to/from work. Please note these are not perfect and ice should always be avoided where possible but they are significantly better than regular tyres, especially when cornering on country roads which is where I find myself running in to most trouble. I don't think it is just the studs that make these better on ice, I think the softer compound & kevlar guard combo give these better grip and I have [touch wood] not had any punctures or slid off again while running the 26 inch version this winter or last. I generally fit this to the front in October/November and remove in March/April depending on 'morning frost levels'. I found fitting both front and rear all season overkill and noise becomes distracting but if its snow and ice I would do both wheels.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Flex78 from Generally good, but with one flaw I have been using this tire for commuting for four winters in Norway. The grip is mostly good enough (but naturally quite a bit less grip than tires with more studs). You just have to know its limitations. Rolling resistance is good. But... After four winters I started to get flat tires. I inspected the tire, and the studs had come right through the tire on 6 - 8 different places. I mentioned this at a discussion, and several others had noticed the same thing. So the relatively low weight of this tire comes at a price. Do I recommend it? Yes and no...

Rated 4 out of 5 by Sweden102 from Fast winter commute Used throughout Swedish winter for commuting to work on CX bike and sometimes at weekends (both summer and winter) for rides on rough singletracks. Soft compound and studs give good grip. Quite fast compared to equivalents.

The Q and A suggest this tyre fits a 700 wheel size but the description indicates a MTB wheel size. Does this tyre fit 700 wheels? Thanks

winter tyres for 650b

hi i am interested in buying a pair of suitable tyres for my 650b. are there any available? or, can i use 26 inch tyres on them for the winter instead?
Asked by: aspendoc
Unfortunately we do not currently have any suitable tyres in stock as a 650b measurement equates to a 27.5" wheel size.

Would these be okay to use on the 700x32 wheels that came as standard on my bike?

Asked by: McGr
This will very much depend upon the clearance of your frame and fork. For further information please contact us directly using sales@wiggle.co.uk

Pressure for run-in period

The description recommends a 40km run-in period. It also says that the tire can be used on ice/snow at minimum pressure and on dry pavement at maximum pressure. What pressure do you recommend for the run-in period?
Asked by: maba0320
Pressure: 35-70 psi.
