Great value reliable chain
8 speed chain strong and reliable, great value. Highly recommended. Could be improved with a better KCM quick link.

Perfect fit and runs smoothly but ...
.... oh boy, was it difficult to join the chain using the Shimano Quick Link! The idea is straightforward but I don't have a tool for the job and it took a while and a lot of pressure from my thumbs to do it successfully. Some people think you're a wuss if you can't do it but I'm proficient at all sorts of practical things and I guess I just don't have the knack (or perhaps the knowledge). Beware.

Chain link is difficult to fit
Like others I'm having difficulty fitting the chain link for this chain. In the end I've bought a pair of KMC connectors because I'll need a spare anyway.

How does the connecting link work?
I've purchased this chain and it doesn't seem to come with any instructions. I've not managed to find any documentation or guidance online either (including Shimano's website). I'm having problems fitting the connecting link (one part is a plate with 2 pins and the other part is a link with a wider entrance on one side which allows for the insertion of one pin, the rest of the link is too narrow to insert the second pin.)
Would someone be able to either:
1. point me to the instructions; or
2. tell me how the connecting link connects?

These are really tough and fiddly when new - if you have the version with the pins on both sides you need to bend the chain slightly to bring the pins together, then fit the receiving side of the link. It takes me a good half hour of swearing and sweating to get these to click in properly.
Chain link pliers help, but perseverance is the real key. There are better links out there, I now replace the supplied links with easier to fit ones.

Do I need to buy Chain Pins as well?
Does this come with the Chain Pin or do I need to purchase this separately?
Asked by: JHONDA
it comes with a link - not a pin but is very easily used with a little bending force - no tools required.

Is the quicklink removable??
Hi,
I installed this chain (incorrectly) yesterday. I was trying to break the quick link but could not undo it. Is it possible to actually open this quicklink that comes with the HG40?
The quicklink I got was the two piece system, with both pins on one link and a flat plate for the other.
If not is it ok to remove pins using a normal chain tool?
Cheers
Asked by: Raaab
The link supplied is not removable.
It is fine to remove links using a chain tool.

5 speed chain
I have a new Shimano 5 speed 14 - 24T freewheel on my Eroica bike (120mm chain stay spacing). The model freewheel is Shimano Cadet SPKA 61 (it has twisted teeth). I am looking for a quality chain to fit.
Asked by: Mountaindancer
It will most likely fit - I previously used a 6 speed freewheel with this chain. However, its not the best quality of lifetime - look to Regina type ones for that. That said, it is low cost and doesn't do any harm to replace more often
