Review from What MTB

What does your extra tenner get you over the Shimano M520s? Well, they're a wee bit lighter and everything just feels a bit better quality out of the box, and there are no spanner flats on the cro-mo spindles so they tighten onto the crank with an allen key out back, looking neater as a result. Apart from that, it's more or less the same pedal, the same gappy mud-friendlier design, the same Shimano float and release feel. You either do or you don't really.

In conclusion...

Affordable, tidy looking, and reassuringly durable

Rating: 8/10

Review from Singletrack

Almost identical to the XT pedal but made slightly cheaper due to lower quality bearings and hence a few grams heavier. But even that extra few (four!) grams does push this pedal to the top of the weight list for non-platformed pedals. But for the chunkiness you do get the same super-quick engagement and lovely positive release as the XT, just in a reversed colour scheme.

In conclusion...

A beefy pedal but for the money it works briliantly and indistinguishable from the XT.

Shimano M540 Pedals is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 384.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Quality SPD pedal I've been using M540's for decades due to them being a brilliant combination of quality & price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by 5ocrates from Worth the extra cost. Arguably nicer looking than the M520 & seem to be better quality. Will be sticking with these from now on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MrPhilbert from Great product These feel really solid. I guess some might think them too heavy, but for a generally keen road cyclist these are great. I went for these to keep the same clear fitting for the shoes I already own. I could justify buying another pair of shoes. Well not just yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Haggis65 from What's to say! Quite simple, great quality, robust and looks good. A little heavy but at this price your buying for durability and functionality.

Whats the difference between these and the M520 Spuds?

Apart from price what is the advantage of buying these pedals over the M520 pedals please?
Asked by: chrisdb
The M540 pedals are lighter and have a simplified built quality making them lighter and more reliable. They both use sealed bearings and Chromoly axles so the difference is small but noticable over the life of the pedal.

Do these pedals have reflective strips as required by law (Highway Code rule 60)?

Asked by: ChristoC
No they will not fit and they are only required to have reflectors on them if they are sold with a new bike not after market.

Clipping out.

Sorry if this has been asked, but are you able with these pedals to release your foot from an direction? The ones I currently have you have to twist your heel in towards the bike and would like to be able to release my foot easier.
Asked by: sllaw97
You should be able to twist your heel out from the bike to dis-engage also, adjust clip tension as per instructions and keep pedal clean/oiled after mucky rides.

What else do I need?

I have these pedals on my Marin Mount Vision and am looking at the shimano Mt60's shoe. As a complete newbie to clipless pedals- what else do I need? Cleats or will these come with the shoe?
Asked by: Macca68
These pedals come with Shimano SH51 black cleats when you buy them new. You will need either SH51 for single release (foot twists outward) or SH56 for multi release (foot twists outward, inward or heel lifts up).
