What is the differnce between fixed and floating cleats? Which one is better for a beginner in the world of road shoes.....please help!

Asked by: Asiri
Float refers to the cleat allowing your foot some movement without unclipping. Fixed do not allow any movement once clipped in. Its not adjustable, hence the options of different cleats & colour coding. It's very much a personal preference thing. The floating ones have the benefit of being a bit more forgiving in the setup as poorly setup fixed creates can contribute to knee damage/ injury. Less likely with floating. Also nice to be able to move around a bit and.change position a bit on longer rides.as you can tell my personal preference is yellow.

Cycled with straps for a year, blue or yellow?

I adapt quickly to new styles of cycling, so wondering if buying yellow cleats would work out expensive because I’d need to buy blue ones shortly after. What would you recommend?
Asked by: LukeJ
I'm afraid that this would be purely down to individual choice and would depend purely on how quickly you feel you could adapt to the slightly stiffer blue cleats, apologies I could not be of more use on this occasion.

Cleats - What do I need ?

I am currently using toe straps on my bike pedals, I want to move over to cleats. Do I need new pedals as well as new shoes and cleats?
Asked by: carlwilly
Unfortunately, the answer is yes: you will need new pedals, shoes and cleats. However, this is highly recommended. You will be surprised how much this will improve your riding. A lot of energy is waisted when your foot is not fixed in position. The good news is, you can do the whole thing relatively cheaply. If you have a look on-line, you can get some entry level Shimano shoes for about $90 (aim for about the 86’s or above) and you can get some pedals for about $40 (I wouldn’t recommend going any lower than Shimano 105). You will find that most websites will send you some free cleats when you buy the pedals, if not, you will need to spend about $25 and get some SPDSLs. I hope this helps.

Fixed Mode or Self Alligning Pedals

As someone who has always ridden with MTB shimano cleats, should I go for SM-SH10 or SM-SH11 cleats for my new roadie?
Asked by: dmorg78
Your better off to go with a little float in your pedals/ cleats - unless you have a specific medical need.
