Description

The end of each mudguard extends to below the hub axle. This length ensures that you, and also the cyclist behind you, are spared from splashing. The Race Blade Long can easily be mounted on almost any racing bike and perfectly adapted to the radius of the wheel by adjusting the length of the stays.

The clip connections ensure that the Race Blade Long can be removed very quickly from the racing bike when not needed, leaving only the metal mounting brackets.

Mudguards = necessary evil, these = least bad ones This latest design is fantastic on 4 accounts: no more endless fiddling to get the fit just right so mounting is quite fast, splitting each mudguard in 2 sections arguably reduces the chance of one of them (usually the longer rear one) snapping, they can be taken off and put back on in seconds and so your winter trainer can turn into a summer bike on demand, and also the long design protects bottom bracket and followers reasonably well without the need to fit heavy home made rubber flaps. All this comes at a (relatively benign but still irritating) cost: front section of the front mudguard is too flappy at least on most British roads, also the clip-ons for the mudguards sections are borderline in terms of strength and so are liable to let sections loose and hence require some creative diy. Overall a massive improvement on previous efforts and still the best mudguards money can buy for a winter trainer / audax bike but room to become even better... 29 June 2014
Makes riding in the rain a bit easier Gives the bike some protection from the rain soaked roads and makes riding in the rain much more tolerable. Although if you ride in a group you'll still get a mouthful of belgian toothpaste from the guy in front and everyone will be lining up to ride behind you. They're easy to fit to the bike and are easily removable but I found the fittings that attach to the QR skewers a bit of a pain when you have a puncture. If I'm going on a ride and know there's no chance of rain I'll remove them completely. Also the front forward guard doesn't fit due to lack of clearance between the tyre and the brake calipers. I use Campag Chorus at the moment and 700Cx25 tyres and I've seen other people having no trouble fitting the front bit onto Sram calipered bikes. They are stiff and light and don't rub on the wheels. They're the best mudguards I've fit onto an eyeletless bike. 28 May 2014
Not robust enough for the road. These are the only long mudguards that would fit in my training bike owing to its close clearances (on the back wheel Crudcatchers rubbed under the brake and behind the front mech) so I had to accept the lack of coverage around the brakes and down the seat tube. Like several other reviewers, my rear one snapped a few weeks ago between the two pairs of stays. No impact involved, just riding on the rough roads we have to put up with nowadays. I put it down to bad luck and rejoined the parts with duct tape. I have just noticed that the rear guard has broken again with two more cracks, this time between the upper stay and the brake. I find this very disappointing considering the price of these guards. I have regular SKS guards on my winter bike and these have given years of trouble-free service. 25 April 2014
Broke after short period of use These guards are a good idea as they allow brake clearance and fitting on bikes without mudguard eyes but unfortunately the rear guard snapped after a few hundred winter miles. My previous SKS guards lasted years. 14 April 2014

Hi, I have the GT GTR 5 2013 road bike and would like to purchase some mudguards, but am concerned about the limited clearance above the front wheel (i tried a pair of bontranger ncs at high street shop and the front wheel rubbed). Is there a robust pair that you would recommend?

This contradicts the answer to the next question down which says that the German web site is correct and these ARE OK for 18-32 not just 18-23!

Unfortunately not. These are only suitable for tyre widths between 18-23 mm. If you require clearance for 25 mm tyres the SKS Race Blade XL Clip On Mudguard Set are going to be the best option.

These guards use metal clips that are held in place using the brake fixings. The guards themselves are well clear of the tyres. The metal clips require a clearance of just 2~3 mm max. I fitted mine to an old Raleigh race bike and the clearance is good. The guards are easily removable for dry weather, though I suspect it would be best not to disturb them too often to avoid wear and tear.

I previously brought a set of SKS Chromoplastics however it turned out these did not fit in the clearance on the 2013 Trek 1.5 I have. Can you advise if the Race Blade Long clip on set will fit with the available clearance on the 2013 Trek 1.5 (or advise of fixed mudguards which will fit on the mountings on the bike).

This should be fine as the clips fit to the brake mechanism. The only available clearance on my bike is the space between tyre and brake mechanism, and these fit just fine.

Without seeing the clearance of your bike unfortunately it is difficult to offer a definitive answer to this for you. The Race blades are designed for road race bikes so I would expect them to be ok. If you do require a very low profile guard then the racer guards are also good option.

I ride a cross bike with more than enough clearance between tyre and brakes.

My question is will the mudguards provide enough coverage for 25mm tyres. And will it fit around a 25mm tyre? I'd rather have a decent set of long mudguards that are reasonably light than settle for raceblades or a heavy pair of commuter guards.

Probably not ... they're quoted as 18-23 so you'll most likely
get some rubbing using 25mm tyres unless you can set the
guards high enough from the tyre !

The maximum recommended size tyre for these is 23c I'm afraid.

Sadly all our race blade styles use this kind of sizing requirements I'm afraid.
